Virginia, the birthplace of the United States - the first permanent British settlement, the birthplace of several presidents. Two more states were created from Virginia, and several more created from land ceded to the new government. The Great Wagon Road and the Wilderness Road – key routes to open and settle the country- ran through Virginia. In our meetings, we discuss all this and look at how to research in
this difficult state.

On September 11, OBON SOCIETY had the pleasure of meeting Geoff Smith, President of the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, at the Columbia River Maritime Museum.

For 80 years, the Genealogical Forum of Oregon has helped people discover and reconnect with their family histories by preserving records, conducting research, and providing genealogical resources. OBON SOCIETY works toward a similar goal by preserving, researching, and returning personal wartime artifacts.

We enjoyed a wonderful conversation about how our two organizations, in different ways, share a common purpose: preserving history and reconnecting families with their past.

Thank you, Geoff and the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, for entrusting this special piece of history to OBON SOCIETY. We are honored to help continue its journey home.
