Dr. Liz Powell

Dr. Liz Powell I'm a psychologist, speaker, author, & coach who believes that Great S*x can change the world!

I'm a psychologist who works with people who feel like the regular dating world doesn't fit for them. I help my clients learn how to tap into their authentic selves to create relationships that are their unique perfect fit and that make them feel worthy and deserving of love exactly how they are. There are no right or wrong relationship styles, just ones that work for us or don't. I am also a deco

rated veteran with 5 years service as an Army Psychologist and one tour in Afghanistan. In work with clients, I am q***r, non-monogamy, and kink-affirming. My approach to therapy and coaching is highly strengths based and values centering the client's needs and goals. I combine techniques from CBT, mindfulness, and evidence based therapies to create a customized treatment plan optimized for each client. Most of all, I love working with those who consider themselves outsiders, burners, q***rdos, misfits, and badasses.

If you know anything about me, you know that I LOVE love. Let's be real, one of my guilty pleasures is romcoms. But, I have to admit that I think the unconditional love they often showcase is best left to the stories and fairytales rather than real life.

Not only is unconditional love an easy way to get us to sacrifice our boundaries for the sake of our relationships, but it's often unfairly pushed onto women and femme-presenting folks. Men are rarely held to such a high standard of sacrificial love for their partners, creating unbalanced relationships. 🤨

I say forget unconditional love. Instead, we should focus on building ethical, equitable, and respectful relationships. Love shouldn't ever mean sacrificing yourself! 💜

If you're worried that speaking up about your discomfort will ruin the mood, I'm going to let you know a secret. If you're not into it, the mood is already off, and you're putting your partner's pleasure over your own.

The mood is NOT that delicate! It's fluid and can be rebuilt if something falls off the rails for a moment.

When you speak up, you're making space for both you and your partner to have a pleasurable scene!

And if your partner makes a big deal about your communicating your needs? Well, that says a lot more about them than it does about you.

Your pleasure matters. Every time. 💜

I am not a fan of a culture of disposability AND sometimes, keeping people in our lives is harmful. You are the only person who can know how much of a relationship you can have with someone without it being more harm than good.

When you have loved ones who vote against your interests and livelihood, it can be empowering to have a conversation with them. However, we must always look at the consequences. What are the consequences of being honest about how you feel or how their political beliefs have impacted you? Do you rely on this loved one financially? Do you have a support system outside of them?

Sometimes, there are no easy choices, only hard ones. But finding ways to advocate for yourself or hear other perspectives can help you make the best choice for your well-being. 💜

I've decided that starting in May, I’ll be pausing my monthly Q&As to focus on my podcast. I recently launched the Do As We Say, Not As They Did Podcast with the one and only Dr. NerdLove.

Some of you may know that I work full-time as a psychologist, so my time is already pulled in a lot of different directions, and after reflection, I believe this is what's best for me at this time.

So, don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere, I’m just changing how I’ll be showing up. 💜

Following the podcast on socials, rating the show, dropping comments, and tuning in every week to listen is the best way to support me right now!

And trust me, the conversations Harris and I get up to are ones that you don’t want to miss. 😉

Intent matters, but it isn’t magic. Hurt doesn’t go away because the actions or words leading up to it were an accident. 🙌

So what should you do if someone hurts you?

You can look at their intent. Did they mean to hurt you?

If they didn’t, was it due to a general thoughtlessness? What do you need to process the hurt? Can they accept that they hurt you even if they feel like they didn’t do anything “wrong?”

From there, can you have a conversation that understands the difference between the intent and the impact of what happened?

No one can communicate perfectly 100% of the time. Our lived experiences give us each a different idea of what’s okay to say and what might be hurtful. What’s important is how we respond after.

Do you love falling in love or playing with lots of different people? I do! 🖐️ It’s one of the reasons that I am non-monogamous. 💜

If you have all this excitement and desire but don’t know quite where to start, my book, Building Open Relationships, is here to be your guide in building and maintaining healthy relationships.

Whether you prefer paperback, ebook, or audiobook, you can pick up a copy directly from me!

Who else is just waiting for a precedented time? I don’t think I’ve seen precedented times since my freshman year of college. Safe to say, it’s been quite a memorable two decades. 😒

On a more serious note, I know that this is a scary time for many of us. As we find ways to fight, hope, or just get through the day, I’ve found it’s helpful to listen to folks who’ve gone through this before.

We are far from the first to see a time like this, and it’s never too late to find community with those around you, even when it feels like everything else is falling apart. 💜

People are complicated and messy. We are all different, whether it’s how we do things, the way we think, or even how we fold laundry.

That’s part of what makes talking to others and building relationships so fun! However, it also means that misunderstandings are bound to pop up. 😜

When those misunderstandings occur, approach the situation with genuine curiosity and humility. That creates an environment that's easier to share information in!
