ACL surgery wipes out the routine an athlete is used to, and phase one immediately post-op sets the tone for the whole comeback. Stiffness, swelling, and soreness are expected. How you manage them decides how smooth the rest of your rehab goes.

Win phase one and every phase after it gets easier.

This is what we teach every ACL athlete who walks into Engine Room in those first few weeks:

✅ Keep a quiet knee
✅ Get it straight
✅ Wake up the quad
✅ Get it moving

What makes ACL rehab at Engine Room different:
🔹 Every session is one on one with your PT, start to finish
🔹 We stay in contact with your surgical team so your plan matches their protocol
🔹 We test, not guess. Objective data guides every progression and every return to sport decision
🔹 We load you like an athlete, not a patient, from day one to your first game back

Looking forward to PT? That’s the whole point.

Sierra has tried a lot of PT over the years. Engine Room is the first place that actually felt worth showing up for, and the results are following.

That doesn’t happen by accident. It’s one on one sessions, a plan built around you, and a team that’s genuinely fired up to see you win.
Rehab doesn’t have to feel clinical.

Thank you, Sierra! We’re pumped to keep building with you. 🧡

Logging more miles won’t make your legs stronger. 👀

Your body gets better at exactly what you ask it to do. Running builds your engine. Strength training builds the frame that engine runs on.

The research backs it up. Heavy strength work has been shown to improve running economy, which means you use less energy at the same pace. And across sports, strength training cut injury rates to less than a third in a large review of randomized trials.

So if your plan is “just run more,” you’re leaving speed and durability on the table.

Start with 2 to 3 strength sessions a week. Make them challenging. Give it 8 to 12 weeks before you judge it.

Tag the runner in your life who’s allergic to leg day. 🏃‍♂️🦵

Your MRI came back and now you're scared to move.

Here's what most people never hear: imaging finds "damage" in tons of people who feel completely fine. Disc bulges, labral tears, and cartilage changes show up in people who have never had a day of pain in their lives.

That doesn't mean your scan is useless. It means it's one piece of the picture. What matters just as much is how you move, how much load you tolerate, and what your body can handle today.

A scary report doesn't mean you're fragile. It means it's time to get evaluated by someone who looks at the whole athlete.

Even PTs need a PT 🤝

Jess is a neuro PT and a roller derby player. When mid back pain had her wondering if she could take contact again, she knew who to call.

Here’s the thing about contact sports. You can’t ease back in. Somebody’s coming for you whether you’re ready or not.

So that’s what we trained for. Feeling good walking around wasn’t the goal. Getting hit and hitting back was.

Her words, not mine: she’s back to taking people’s lunch money again. 💸

This is what a good circle looks like.

Four run clubs. One massive group warmup. A whole lot of people who show up for each other. We got to lead it today with Sunnyside Wellness Cooldown | Run Club + Apparel Old Port Pub Run ahead of tomorrow’s Maine Marathon, and Matt Salvatore and I had an absolute blast.

To every runner toeing the line tomorrow, our past and present patients and everyone else: you didn’t get here alone. Go enjoy every mile. We’ll be cheering for you! 🏃🔥

Introducing What Fuels Us 🔥

Every other Friday I’ll be answering questions about what drives me, what makes Engine Room different, and where we’re headed.

First up: why we love Portland 🫶🏻

This place moves. Runners out on the Eastern Prom at sunrise. Fort Fitzy packed on a Saturday night. Lifters, climbers, weekend warriors, and everyone in between showing up for each other. That’s the Maine I know, and it’s a big part of why Engine Room exists.❤️

With marathon weekend here and fall settling in, this felt like the best way to kick off this series.

We’re building something for this community, and we want you along for the ride.

Follow along. This is just the beginning. 👊

"If it hurts, don't do it" sounds safe. It's usually the slowest way back.

When you avoid everything that causes discomfort, your body loses strength and tolerance. Then even more things start to hurt. The list of stuff you can't do keeps growing.

Pain is information. Some discomfort during training is fine and expected. The key is knowing how much, what kind, and how your body responds the next day.

That's where good rehab lives. Not in avoiding pain, but in using it to guide how you load and progress.

Everybody is an athlete and every athlete deserves expert care.
