Jewish Family & Child Service - Portland, Oregon Jewish Family & Child Service (JFCS) provides social services that improve the lives of adults, families, and children in the Jewish and general communities.

Jewish Family & Child Service (JFCS) has assisted Portland-area residents for 70 years. We help marginalized people of all faiths and backgrounds realize their full potential, and serve diverse communities that have evolving needs. In particular, JFCS excels at helping vulnerable seniors and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live with dignity and autonomy. JFCS offers a wide

range of human services including individual, couple, family, and group counseling, services for seniors and people with disabilities, emergency assistance and referrals during time of crisis, services for immigrant and refugees and Holocaust survivors. All our services are offered without regard to age, race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

On June 3, JFCS celebrated Holocaust Survivor Day with a luncheon for more than 100 people — local Holocaust Survivors along with their friends, family, and other community members — to honor the extraordinary Survivors in our community. Through music, poetry, personal displays, and stories, we reflected on our Survivors' unique legacy. We honor them, not only for their resilience, but for their creativity and wisdom that continues to flourish and inspire. Beautiful performances by family members of Survivors, Asher Milman on violin and baritone Anton Belov, made the afternoon especially meaningful. All Survivors in attendance were honored by name and presented with journals and flowers. The day concluded with a powerful group photo featuring more than 40 Holocaust Survivors—a moving reminder of the strength, connection, and community represented in the room. Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating and raising awareness of Holocaust Survivor Day. And a special thank you to Seed the Dream Foundation for sponsoring this event.

June 4 is Holocaust Survivor Day, a global day to celebrate the remarkable lives and enduring legacy of Holocaust Survivors and to recognize the bravery, resilience, and strength of the approximately 196,600 Holocaust survivors still living today. On Holocaust Survivor Day and every day, JFCS honors the more than 80 local Holocaust Survivors in the Portland area who continue to enrich our community through their creativity, wisdom, leadership, and resilience. We are privileged to learn from them, celebrate their contributions, and ensure their stories and experiences remain part of our shared community life. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our intergenerational Comedy Experience on Sunday. Part of JFCS' AGE (Arts. Generations. Engage.) initiative, we came together and laughed, played, connected, and even stepped a little outside our comfort zones. The talented team at Portland Comedy Theater had us cracking up with their improv performances before our leader Patrick led us through a series of interactive games that challenged us to listen closely, work together, and think on our feet. One of the biggest takeaways? The value of being heard. Through laughter and play, we were reminded how meaningful it is to be present, truly listen, and connect with one another. A huge thank you to the fabulous team at Portland Comedy Theater for helping create such a joyful, memorable afternoon.

Caring for an older adult can bring both meaning and challenge. Family caregivers often navigate complex care systems, emotional changes, and shifting needs – often without a clear place to turn.

Mark your calendar for next Tuesday, June 9th at 2pm for a community event to support family caregivers of older adults through education, connection, and resources.

The event will include a panel of professionals with expertise in home care, grief and loss, and caregiver wellbeing, offering practical guidance and insight into the caregiving experience.
