Do you have a version of yourself that gets smaller at exactly the moments when you need to be largest?

The people I've worked with most, C-suite leaders, seasoned practitioners, educators, trades experts, parents, people who've earned authority, almost all do. It happens so fast it doesn't feel like a choice.

The cost isn't just personal. When the most capable people in a room are running a quiet contraction program, the whole system adjusts to that absence.

On May 7th, we're offering a Making Meaning From Mess Series two-hour workshop, Meeting the Part of You That Refuses to Stay Small, through the Portland Processwork Clinic, to work with this directly.

Not the thinking part. The somatic part. The split second in your nervous system before you speak where the reduction happens.

We work with the body, not just the mind. Because this particular pattern doesn't live in our thinking. It lives in the split second before we speak, and what happens in our nervous system in that moment.

You'll leave with something specific: your personal pattern named clearly, and direct experience of staying present one beat past where you usually retreat.

$60 / $80 / $120 sliding scale.

We'd be grateful if you passed it along to anyone in your network you think this may speak to. Thank you.

The Calculation

Every time you walk into a room, you're running a calculation. Is it safe for all of me to be here?

It happens before you think. Faster than thought.

Sometimes the answer is yes. Too often, the answer is no.

So you edit yourself. Smaller voice. Safer opinions. The version of you that won't upset anyone. It's automatic. It's protective. It's also exhausting.

And it costs more than you think.

The part of you that refuses to stay small is still in there. Still trying to get your attention. Still asking: When are we going to be brave enough?

What if one evening you actually listened to that question? What if you sat in a room with others who get it, who feel it too, and you practiced being the size you actually are?

You think conflict is about what happened.

Sometimes it is.

But more often… it’s about what took over.

The raised voice in the meeting.
The shutdown.
The over-explaining that started before you even knew you were defending yourself.

That wasn’t just about the agenda item.

It was something older.

Something fast.
Something that moved before you had a choice.

I’ve spent 40 years watching smart, capable people lose themselves in conflict — not because they didn’t know better…
…but because knowing better has very little to do with it.

Conflict doesn’t live in the content.

It lives in:
-what gets activated
-how power is experienced in the moment
-and whether you can stay with yourself when it matters most

Tomorrow we go there.

Not conceptually.

Experientially.

What are you actually fighting for when you're in conflict?

Not what you say you're fighting for. What's really running the show, in your body, before the words even start.

That's what we're getting into this Wednesday night.

Transforming Conflict From the Inside Out

By the time you walk into a difficult conversation, you've already been in it for days.

You've run it in your mind. You know what they'll say. You know how it goes.

You've fought them a hundred times before they've opened their mouth.

That inner version of your opponent, the one you've built from past experience and present fear, is almost always more powerful and more terrible than the actual person.

You arrive at the real conflict already exhausted. Fighting two opponents at once.

Workshop 3 in the Making Meaning From Mess series is about the conflict that happens inside you, long before words are spoken, and what becomes available when you learn to work there.

Last night, someone brought something in the in room that brought everyone to a pause.

They'd been replaying a conflict in their mind for two years. Every version ended the same way. They lost.

By the end of the evening, they'd tried on their opponent. Stepped into what made them so threatening. And found something surprising: the very quality that infuriated them most? The one they'd spent two years fighting?

Was the quality they needed most.

That's what conflict can offer us when it knocks at our door and we answer it from inside and invite it in.

We will be navigating what happens next in the Making Meaning From Mess Series third workshop: Transforming Conflict From the Inside Out.

Not everything can be fixed. But some things can be transformed from the inside. There's a difference.

Most conflict isn’t actually with the other person.

It’s with the version of them we’ve been arguing with in our heads.

You know the one.

The imaginary debate.
The perfect comeback you think of three hours later.
The tight stomach before a conversation even begins.

By the time the real conversation happens, we’re already exhausted from the inner fight.

This workshop explores a radically different idea inspired by Joe Goodbread’s work on Befriending Conflict:

Conflict might not be the problem.
Our relationship to it might be.

Instead of trying to win, avoid, or control conflict, we learn how to slow down and become curious about what is happening inside us first.

Because when awareness increases, something surprising happens:

Conflict becomes less destructive and more revealing.

In this experiential workshop you’ll learn how to:

• notice the early signals of conflict in your body and mind
• recognize the “inner opponent” we carry into difficult conversations
• work with emotional reactions instead of being driven by them
• reconnect with a deeper source of personal power when conflict intensifies

Who This Workshop Is For
People who:

• replay arguments in their heads
• avoid difficult conversations until they explode
• feel flooded, defensive, or shut down in conflict
• want to stay steady when tensions rise

No prior experience with conflict training, inner work or Process Work is required.

Making Meaning From Mess is a 12-part in-person experiential workshop series offered through the Portland Processwork Clinic for people who want to relate differently to the challenges that arise in relationships, work, and everyday life—not as problems to fix, but as signals carrying information, direction, and potential.

Across the series, we slow things down enough to notice what is usually missed: subtle body signals, emotional shifts, emerging roles, power dynamics, and moments where choice quietly disappears.

Through guided inner work, interactive exercises, real-life examples, and shared reflection, participants learn to track what’s happening within themselves and between people, especially when situations feel messy, charged, or unclear.

Each workshop invites you to bring your own lived experience, experiment with new responses, and build practical awareness skills that support honest dialogue, wiser use of power, and more humane ways of being with one another, particularly in moments that matter most.
