Most conflict isn’t actually with the other person.
It’s with the version of them we’ve been arguing with in our heads.
You know the one.
The imaginary debate.
The perfect comeback you think of three hours later.
The tight stomach before a conversation even begins.
By the time the real conversation happens, we’re already exhausted from the inner fight.
This workshop explores a radically different idea inspired by Joe Goodbread’s work on Befriending Conflict:
Conflict might not be the problem.
Our relationship to it might be.
Instead of trying to win, avoid, or control conflict, we learn how to slow down and become curious about what is happening inside us first.
Because when awareness increases, something surprising happens:
Conflict becomes less destructive and more revealing.
In this experiential workshop you’ll learn how to:
• notice the early signals of conflict in your body and mind
• recognize the “inner opponent” we carry into difficult conversations
• work with emotional reactions instead of being driven by them
• reconnect with a deeper source of personal power when conflict intensifies
Who This Workshop Is For
People who:
• replay arguments in their heads
• avoid difficult conversations until they explode
• feel flooded, defensive, or shut down in conflict
• want to stay steady when tensions rise
No prior experience with conflict training, inner work or Process Work is required.

Making Meaning From Mess is a 12-part in-person experiential workshop series offered through the Portland Processwork Clinic for people who want to relate differently to the challenges that arise in relationships, work, and everyday life—not as problems to fix, but as signals carrying information, direction, and potential.
Across the series, we slow things down enough to notice what is usually missed: subtle body signals, emotional shifts, emerging roles, power dynamics, and moments where choice quietly disappears.
Through guided inner work, interactive exercises, real-life examples, and shared reflection, participants learn to track what’s happening within themselves and between people, especially when situations feel messy, charged, or unclear.
Each workshop invites you to bring your own lived experience, experiment with new responses, and build practical awareness skills that support honest dialogue, wiser use of power, and more humane ways of being with one another, particularly in moments that matter most.
