Consider these tips when tending to your gardens:
1. Warm up; walk around your yard, do some squats, stretch wrists and back and legs
2. Stay hydrated; keep water near by and drink frequently. Consider wearing a hat and using sunscreen.
3. Don’t be afraid to use aids; wheel barrows, kneeling pads with bars, ergonomic shovels. Use the “right tool for the right job”
4. Change positions frequently to avoid repetitive movements; rake, then prune, then w**d. Chck your posture frequently.
5. Bend at the knees and keep your core tight. Ask for help when lifting heavier or awkward items.

A PT lesson from the barnyard! 🐮 💧
Some of the more common complaints we deal with in the clinic have to due with nerve pain…numbness in the hands when typing at work, tingling down the leg after picking a box up, etc. A good comparison for nerve pain can be related to a compressed garden hose. The outer part of the hose is like the nerve membrane with the water flowing through the hose representing the messages traveling from the brain/spinal cord to the rest of the body. When you have a “pinched or compressed nerve” (herniated disc, injury, poor posture, etc) the messages can’t flow properly to the body part. Just as a compressed hose only lets water drizzle through the nozzle, a compressed nerve results in numbness/tingling, weakness, or loss of function! If only it could be fixed as quickly as getting a cow to step its hoof off of the hose 🤪…
