As a culminating reflection in the Foundations course, our first-year OT students created concept maps illustrating how learning across all of their summer semester courses connects into a bigger picture of occupational therapy practice. Through this process, they discovered that becoming an audacious occupational therapy wayfinder requires more than knowledge alone. It requires empathy, advocacy, evidence-informed practice, courage, community, and a commitment to helping individuals and communities flourish.

We are so proud to see our University of New England Occupational Therapy students featured by NBCOT®!

Collaboration is at the heart of healthcare, and this spring's pediatric simulation gave of our OT, nursing, and PT students hands-on experience with real-world scenarios. As OT student Rebecca Rogers put it, learning to connect across disciplines is a vital skill no textbook can fully teach.

Way to go, future practitioners! 👏💙⚡️

"Occupational therapy services don't happen in a vacuum." That idea was on full display at the University of New England this spring.

Nearly 110 nursing, physical therapy, and occupational therapy students came together for a full-day pediatric simulation, working in interprofessional teams to assess and treat child and parent actors across four real-world acute care scenarios. For the OT students, that meant hands-on work like adaptive dressing tasks, carried out alongside teammates from other disciplines and debriefed together.

As OT student Rebecca Rogers put it, one of the biggest strengths OT has is connecting with other health professions, something no textbook can fully teach.

🖐️🎓 Our second-year MSOT students explored the use of Kinesio-tape as a therapeutic modality to support occupational performance. Through hands-on practice, they learned how taping can enhance movement, provide support, and help clients participate more fully in the activities that matter most.

Students in Dr. Lambdin-Pattavina’s Foundations of Occupational Therapy course created conceptual model hats inspired by Mahoney and Smallfield’s article, “Hats On! A Teaching Innovation to Make Theory Visible in Professional Reasoning”.

This creative activity helps make theory more tangible and visible. The hats invite students to think about how conceptual models guide occupational therapy practitioners throughout the OT process, shaping what we notice, ask, prioritize, and do in practice. By making theory visible, students begin to see conceptual models not as content to memorize, but as lenses that support professional reasoning, occupation-centered practice, and the development of their professional identity.
