It was a beautiful August evening spent enjoying the company of the people who make this place special by believing in it! What does an Electrical Engineer see in our food pantry?

After retiring from a career in engineering, Mary Anne found a new way to put her analytical skills to work: helping neighbors access food with dignity and ease. Here's what she has to say after a year of service:

"I feel that [pantry visitors] are being effectively helped. By doing simple tasks, I'm helping people get food. And there is room for me to contribute in my own way. When we have the ability, we have to help others. It's a basic, simple thing to do."

Whether you love face-to-face interactions or prefer to help out behind the scenes, your unique contributions help us create the experience that is a choice-centered food pantry, where diverse Portlanders can get their needs met effectively.

Did you know that every year several Portland nonprofits host Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest volunteers for a year of dedicated service and learning?

We have the privilege of being one of these sites. And this year is special because we’ve been able to support the orientation and training of this year’s cohort before their service begins. WTH Counselor Justyna Wolek, LCSW, led a seminar this week on identity for Portland JVCs. The group discussed how identity comes into play when providing services - and also how identity impacts how folks show up to receive services.

The young people in this room will be serving diverse Portlanders at William Temple House (go Beverly!), Rose Haven Street Roots Northwest Pilot Project and POIC

Goodbyes are hard and saying goodbye to Mary, our 2026 Jesuit Volunteer, and Casey, our Social Services Coordinator, was no exception. Taking silly photos, though, seems to always be really easy here at WTH.

During a challenging year, Mary and Casey embodied the heart of William Temple House by building relationships, serving each visitor with compassion and presence, and adapting our services in the face of a SNAP crisis. We're grateful to our partnership with Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest for bringing us dedicated, incredible young volunteers like Mary every year.

We asked Mary what she'd miss most. She simply said: "The people. It's the people that make this place."

That's the most people we've ever served in one pantry day.

➡️ If this number surprises you, you're not alone. Food insecurity is growing in our community, even if it's not always visible or in the news.

Demand for food assistance and low-cost counseling continues to rise at William Temple House. Sharing posts like this helps more people understand what's happening right here in Portland.

The most powerful lesson Tony Martinez, KPTV Reporter, learned at William Temple House was a question: "What else is true?"

You may recognize Tony from your TV, but Tony also interned in William Temple House’s Counseling Clinic in 1998 as part of his Master of Social Work training.

“At WTH, I learned to ask the question ‘what else is true?’. We all face tough situations, disagreeable people and general negativity in life. If we are persistent in asking ‘what else is true?’ in those situations, we eventually get past the negativity and arrive at a truth that is useful, positive and upon which we can build and grow.”

For over 60 years, hundreds of counselors and social workers have trained at William Temple House and carried that training forward in their careers and communities, here in Portland and beyond. Interns like Tony have helped make accessible & compassionate mental health care possible for so many.
