MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (MHBBCH) is Maine’s premier pediatric referral hospital with 51 Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit beds and eight Pediatric Intensive Care Unit beds. The children’s hospital, located within MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland, has almost 13,000 pediatric Emergency Department visits a year and provides services in cancer treatment, cardiology, neonatal care and numerous other pediatric specialties. MHMMC Portland was proud to participate in AAA’s annual "100 Days of Safe Driving" kickoff yesterday. As Maine’s only Level I Trauma Center, we see the results of distracted driving and driving without a seatbelt. Teens are among those most at risk.

Our trauma medical director, Dr. Bryan Morse, has these three tips:
• Buckle up, every trip, every seat: Seat belts remain the single most effective way to prevent death and severe injury in a motor vehicle collision.
• Slow down and eliminate distractions: As trauma surgeons, we routinely care for patients whose lives change in seconds because of speeding, texting or impaired driving. Put the phone away, obey speed limits, and never drive impaired.
• Share the road and expect the unexpected: Summer means more motorcycles, bicyclists, pedestrians, construction zones and tourists on Maine roads. Pay extra attention, increase following distance and drive defensively to prevent tragedies before they reach the trauma center.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s has teamed up with the March of Dimes to make a new service available to families of patients in the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The Mammha app aims to address the emotional challenges families often experience during and after a NICU hospitalization by connecting parents and caregivers with mental health resources, screenings, therapy options and individualized care coordination.

NICU families are eligible for Mammha services for a full year after their babies leave the hospital.

The Log A Load For Kids annual auction, organized by the PLC of the Northeast - Professional Loggers, is always filled with unforgettable, memory-making moments.

We are deeply grateful to the PLC, along with their members, friends, and families, who came together to raise an incredible $134,610 in support of sick and injured children across northern New England. Year after year, this community’s generosity truly amazes us. Even in challenging times, they continue to show up for one another and for children in need.

A special thank you to the 2026 Champion Families, whose stories inspired this amazing community to give generously and bid often. They are a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we invest in a healthier future for kids.
