If your horse can't see well, they don't feel well. They are prey animals, and their nervous system relies solely on being able to detect danger well. If they can't do that, their nervous system can't smoothly switch back-and-forth from fight or flight to rest and digest. If they can't come down to rest and digest, they can't absorb nutrition well. They likely don't rest enough, so you have a prey animal who becomes sleep-deprived, which, quite frankly, makes any mammal insane. There is just too much that can be affected by such a small piece on such a large animal.

The average horse goes through around 7 homes in their lifetime.

As someone who used to work at the racetrack and was directly involved with rehoming, retiring racehorses, I think 7 homes is a conservative estimate.

But, let’s go with the 7 statistic.

That’s 7 times moving to places with humans who have new expectations and new ways of communicating.

7 times of leaving established bonds with other horses, if the horse is “lucky” enough to even have access to social turnout in the first place.

7 times of having their sense of stability uprooted.

If this stat existed for any other animal, people would be beside themselves.

Imagine if the dogs were bought, sold and discarded as often and with so little thought like what horses are.

It wouldn’t fly.

Yes, horses are expensive. Yes, people like to ride them.

Neither of these things hold any weight on a discussion solely pertaining to the wellbeing of the horse and what is fair to them, though.

Horses deserve better.

Navigating the systemic changes to create that “better” may be uncomfortable and difficult for humans but we owe horses a lot.

Causing ourselves a little discomfort in creating a new paradigm is the least we can do to honour animals who have gone to war for us, built civilizations for us and continue to suffer for human enjoyment.

We can do better by them now.

But, that starts with an honest conversation about the extent to which we are currently failing them.

It’s a hard conversation to have but a necessary one.

When people still talk about horses as if they have the capacity to be 'manipulative'. 💭😒

It is the year 2026, right?

Have you picked up a book lately?

When we attribute their behaviors or responses to us their lack of willingness we really lose the thread.... what made them feel this way in the first place?

Above all else, the size of their frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex alone renders them COMPLETELY INCAPABLE of abstract thoughts and malicious behavior.

There isn't anything that diminishes my opinion of a human being more than lack of accountability. Horses all truly try and get a long, but they are prey animals and although they are exceptionally brilliant, there is really only one thing on their mind:

Am I safe?

That's it.

So, what are you doing to prove to them that they are?

Because if you're viewing them from the mindset that they are out to get you, I can guarantee your default response to undesirable behavior is to punish it. That behavior is only a response to one of two things: fear or pain. I would bet my life now and three lifetimes from now. Replace the horse with a toddler hypothetically in that scenario.

Your child doesn't understand, or is scared, or is hurting.... they can't articulate words well to describe what their going through. They do things to get your attention one way or another. What if every time they tried to connect and express their concern they were punished?

They would either give up or get louder. The way you respond determines whether you fracture or strengthen your relationship.

Tell me I'm wrong.

Provide evidence, too.

We've spent eight years in this beautiful place building our Dream together. Goals have shifted, perspectives changed, and priorities are different but one thing will always remain:

I am confident the partner I chose for this life wholeheartedly wants to see me win, and that is half of what makes a person successful. (Leslie Desmond says if they're not there to help they're in the way, so I think I found a good one 😄)

When we bought this farm we closed exactly one month to the day before we were planned to be married here. It rained on our wedding day and I was supposed to ride my soul horse, Kharuso down the aisle, he was to give me away (not my parents🙄) but due to his umbrella phobia we nixed that idea. When the rain let up I had to get my pictures with my boy in my wedding dress! My husband understood, but the guests were a little miffed.
