The Extinction Burst: This is what psychologists mean when we say things may get a bit more difficult before they get better. Hang in there! It gets better.

Day 1 and 2 of your new bedtime routine: Your child actually goes to bed. You think "This is WORKING!"

Day 3: Your child screams for 45 minutes. Comes out of their room six times. Sobs that they're scared, their stomach hurts, they need water.

You're standing there thinking: "What did I do WRONG? I should just give up."

Here's what I need you to know: You didn't do anything wrong.

What you're seeing is actually PROOF your strategy is working.

There's a specific neurological reason why behavior gets worse right after you start a new plan. It's called an extinction burst—and if you don't understand what's happening, you'll quit right before breakthrough.

Most parents give up during the hardest week. They quit when the behavior spikes and it feels like everything is falling apart.
