📣 Athlete feature! Leah ran the St. Paddy’s Day 10K this morning as a part of a larger training plan to prepare for her marathon, and crushed it. Inspired by her dedication to putting in the consistent early morning work to achieve milestones like these along the way. Well done Leah! 💫

With the 2025 Olympic Mountain Trail Races just under a month away, I am reflecting back to the opportunity to pace Keith for the last few miles of his OMTR 100K in 2024. It was a mission to ‘protect the podium’ and that Keith did! As a fellow coach, it was an honor and a great time to get to be a part of this incredible race. For anyone interested, is a fantastic race experience and would highly recommend!

Training for long summer trail runs and ultras and working on figuring out your fueling needs?

Throwback to my talk at this past winter’s trail running workshop hosted by where I used the analogy of ‘Building a Pizza’ to inform some best practices for fueling for endurance running. Key points:

The Dough = As an endurance athlete, a majority of caloric consumption should be comprised of carbs, not precluding the need for a balanced diet including proteins, produce, fiber, healthy fats.

The Sauce = Iron promotes oxygen availability and improved performance. In low animal-product eating regimens especially, consuming iron-rich foods along with Vitamin C has been shown to improve iron absorption. More info on iron needs:

The Toss = One of the main reasons pizza makers toss dough into the air is to look up at it from below and check for spots that may have gotten too thin when they were stretching it out - weak spots. Use your long training runs to check for weak spots in your fueling strategy, ahead of race day. See what foods work for you on the go, how many you can carry, and what frequency per hour you need to consume water and calories to stay ahead of fatigue.

Toppings = Eating regimens and fueling strategies necessarily vary for everyone due to preferences and personal needs. Additionally, training and race days needs will be dependent on weather and course conditions: heat, humidity, elevation gain, altitude etc. Do what works for you.

The Bake = On race day, do what you know and have practiced. Balanced eating in the months leading up to race day contributes to a better experience and improved performance on race day, so practice how you want your fueling regimen to look not just on race day, but in the training period leading up to it, and then proceed with what you know on race day.

💫 This information was compiled based off of my years consulting with and learning from nutritionists and sports dieticians, to address key components of endurance fueling needs - from a coach’s perspective. Though not a nutritionist myself, I am happy to provide recommendations.

Shout out to .berg for his all-time PR at the Eugene Half Marathon! Not only was this a time improvement from his last half marathon ran at the end of last year (with a similar elevation profile), but it was also a big improvement in overall approach and racing strategy.

In reviewing the fine details of what went so well in this race versus the last, Justin gave me approval to share some of the pacing charts here. Notably, in the April Eugene Half, he took the approach of going out more controlled and steadily working his way out of pace corals and into faster pace zones, ultimately translating to an overall faster race and finishing faster and stronger than he began. This is a great example of how often times it is the process goals (rather than just the time ones) that exemplify the major wins. So thanks Justin for letting us shed light on this!

The sizable move toward faster paces across the run is reflective of the interval and progression work he did to prepare for the race, and also speaks to a large amount of room to continue knocking off many more minutes. Next you see him, a congrats is in order! Now, with this strong foundation built, onto the next goal 🏃‍♂️ 🌲
