Self-Awareness is Key!!
Hello Unicorns...
As a reminder, the studio will be closed from June16-24 as I am going to Florida to visit my Dad for Father's Day!
Before I leave, I wanted to drop something in your inbox about how to take care of yourself while I am gone.
When people come into Suite 112 with chronic back pain, locked-up traps, or a neck that won't turn, they usually expect me to give them a stretching routine, but I leave the stretching to the PTs. My job is different. My job is to help you unlock Awareness! Awareness is key to realizing exactly why your body actually hurts.
Yes, it's your posture. Yes, it's sitting at a desk all day hunched over a keyboard. Yes, it's life! But it also deeply psychological. Your body keeps score on your stress and your mindset and holds tension in various areas for various reasons;
1. The Stress Hunch: Notice how your shoulders creep up to your ears when a deadline is looming? Stress literally changes how we hold ourselves, collapsing our chest and tightening our neck when we feel overwhelmed or lack confidence.
2. The "Yes Man" Trap: Are you constantly saying "yes" to everyone and blurring your own boundaries? The mental weight physically manifests as a wall of concrete on your shoulders causing stiffness in the upper back.
3. The Control Bracing: If you are someone who carries the weight of the world on your shoulders and feel like you have to deal with everything all on your own and find it hard to just let go and relax, then your lower back and hips keep score. You brace your core and glutes subconsciously, holding onto tension like a shield because your brain is afraid to lose control.
4. The Over-Guarding cycle: If you have had an old injury or emotional trauma, your brain subconsciously over-guards certain areas. When I am working on the area and the nerves twitch uncontrollably or your body shifts away from me, that is a sign of over-guarding. Your brain is literally trying to protect something that isn't there. You can't run far on the massage table, but I am there to let you know, you are safe with me! I slow down, go gently, and allow your nervous system to realize it is ok to let go. I am here to help you let go.
5. The "Fidgety Giver": I see a lot of clients who constantly try to "help me" move their arms and legs on the table. Shifting around and saying "sorry" when they can't stay still. If that's you, Stop apologizing! Your brain is having a hard time clocking-out and relaxing, so next time you are on my table, try not to help. Trust me, your legs don't weigh that much. Instead, just pretend you are asleep and make your body completely heavy by focusing on your breathing and imagining your tension leaving your body. Let me do all the heavy lifting... it is my work-out after all.
You can stretch all day long, but if don't change your awareness, then the tension will always come back. Please just leave your stress on my table, come in for the hour you had to yourself the whole month, and let me help you let go! Take a nap!
When you lie on my table, I am not just rubbing oil on you, I am here to help you break psychological habits so your body can return to optimum health.
I want you to, right now, Take a Deep breath, in thru your nose, and out your mouth in a big Sigggghhhhhhh.... Unclench that jaw and drop your shoulders.
You got this! And I can't wait to see all of you when I return!
