🩺✨ Celebrating a Legacy of Care Since 1998! Dr. Ian Kovach has been caring for our community and region at PRMC for over 25 years ❤️🏥

What a lovely surprise it was to learn about Dr. Ian Kovach at Rotary Club of Pratt Kansas, in Pratt, today. May Program Chairman Robert Smiley arranged for Dr. Kovach to present to the club. Robert’s wife, Kelli, is a nurse practitioner who has worked with Dr. Kovach for years. As Robert noted in his introduction, Dr. Kovach hardly needs an introduction, as many in the room have benefited from his care and expertise over the past 28 years.

Dr. Kovach shared an overview of his upbringing and life experiences. The son of a scientist and psychologist, he spent much of his childhood and adolescence living in various countries around the world. Eventually, he settled at a boarding school in Colorado Springs, where he attended high school, discovered the value of hard work, and graduated first in his class.

He later enrolled in a dual-degree program involving MIT, where he studied physics, and Harvard Medical School, where he developed a passion for orthopedics. Dr. Kovach earned both his PhD from MIT and his MD from Harvard before moving to San Antonio to complete his orthopedic residency training in a warmer climate.

Although Dr. Kovach had lived in Topeka as a child, it was his first marriage that ultimately brought him back to Kansas, where his wife’s family resided in the Hutchinson area. Since arriving in Pratt in 1998, Dr. Kovach has been a tremendous asset to both Pratt Regional Medical Center and the Pratt community, building an outstanding orthopedic practice drawing patients from across Kansas and the surrounding region.

Dr. Kovach and his wife, Laurie, have four adult children: Maggie, a fierce public defender; Will, a corporate attorney; Janessa, a nurse; and Cassidy, an addiction counselor. He enjoys flying, traveling, and staying in good physical shape.

Thank you, Dr. Kovach, for your 28 years of service and expertise. We appreciate you!

💚 More good days start with honest conversations, small acts of kindness, and reminding each other that no one has to struggle alone.

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month. Each May, Mental Health America (MHA) and other mental health organizations bring more focus to mental health awareness, usually accompanying this awareness with a theme. 2026’s theme is “More Good Days, Together.”

This reminds us that mental health is not about merely surviving difficult moments, but about creating more moments filled with hope, connection, and purpose. Mental Health America chose this theme to help us remember that we all experience a variety of days - good, bad, and hard - and when we have support from people around us, we can see a big difference in the number of good days versus not-so-good ones.

A “good day” will look different to each of us. For some, it could mean feeling active and driven. Others may find it in smaller ways - getting out of bed, going to work, being at school, or finding a calm moment in the midst of chaos and stress. The theme encourages us to find compassion for ourselves and others and reminds us that progress - not perfection - is the goal.

“Together” is another important word in the theme. Our mental health can improve when we begin to feel seen, heard, valued, and supported. So let us all take time to do something small - check in on someone you care about, listen without judgment or rushing to “fix” things, say something encouraging to someone who may be struggling, or offer any small act of kindness.

These actions help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, build stronger connections, and remind others they are not alone in their struggles and that there is hope for more good days ahead.

From the operating room to the classroom 💙

When Amanda Garnett walked into the PRMC Administration office carrying an armful of blue trays, it quickly became a perfect photo moment! These trays, originally used for sterile surgical supplies, are being given a second life thanks to the creativity and generosity of our ambulatory and surgery teams.

After supplies are unwrapped and used, the trays are collected and donated to the 4 and 5-year-old students in Crystal Newby’s Southwest Elementary classroom where they’ve become a fun and useful learning tool for little hands and big imaginations.

Mrs. Newby generously shared photos of her students (with parents’ permission), and seeing their smiles with the blue trays in action made this effort even more meaningful.

A huge thank you to Amanda and the entire surgery team for finding thoughtful ways to repurpose materials and give back to our community! 💙♻️
