For the past 7 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with men in recovery, locally & nationwide. This work is deeply personal to me because I’ve been there. There’s a saying I’ve always loved:
“You are best qualified to teach the person you used to be.”
I understand that in a way that goes far beyond words.
One of the comments I hear most often from my students is:
“Yoga is the highlight of my week. I skipped the gym option to be here instead.”
What takes place in that room is about so much more than yoga.
These men open their hearts & their minds to new possibilities... They learn how to better connect with their bodies, listen to what their bodies are telling them & recognize the sacred gift of health & life - precious, delicate & temporary.
They begin to understand that time is limited. The body has limits. Continued abuse eventually requires a price.
They also discover something powerful:
The body can become an ally in recovery.
Through movement, breath, stillness & awareness, they learn to reconnect with themselves, with their purpose, their higher selves & the person they are choosing to become.
Little by little, these practices become part of something much bigger:
Sobriety.
Strength.
Self-awareness.
Purpose.
Inner fortitude.
It is an honor be in that room each week & share tools that helped change my own life with people courageously choosing to change theirs.
This is why I do what I do.
