Returning to an interrupted task asks the brain to recover more than a location on a page. It also needs to reconnect with the purpose, relevant information, previous decisions, and the action that was supposed to come next.

A clearer pathway back can begin with three simple steps:

Name the place you reached.
Name the action you want to take next.
Re-enter through that direction when you return.

This everyday strategy supports purposeful shifting by helping important information remain available as attention moves through changing demands.

Sometimes the clearest picture of this work appears years later.

DeAnn Jose Hatleli has been part of our journey almost from the beginning—nearly 17 years. Yesterday, she shared an update about Gabi, a young woman she began working with in 2016.

During Gabi’s first weeks of CFDT, she spoke very little. She had thoughts and ideas, but getting them organized and into words was extremely difficult. Her own belief at the time was:

“I can’t do hard things.”

DeAnn did not allow Gabi’s current functioning to define what she believed might become possible.

She met Gabi where she was. She adjusted the challenge, found ways to create meaningful participation, and helped her accomplish one thing. Then another. Then another.

DeAnn offered a reminder that every developing CFDT practitioner needs to hear:

“If you ever have the thought that the person in front of you can’t do something, you are wrong. We just have to meet them in their space and help them do one thing. It all grows from there.”

CFDT requires knowledge, observation, adaptability, and intentional challenge. It also requires a practitioner who is willing to remain curious—to look beyond what is happening in the present moment and continue creating conditions in which more may become possible.

This year, Gabi graduated from high school and is preparing to attend a two-year paralegal program.

As DeAnn said:

“Gabi is a shining example of how possible it is to change the trajectory of someone’s life.”

Her story reminds us that development does not begin with assuming what a person cannot do.

It begins with finding the next usable step—and building from there.

Gabi’s story is shared with permission from Gabi, her mother, and DeAnn. The accompanying image is illustrative.
