And isn't that the truth?
When I first found my way to yoga, I wasn't searching for enlightenment. I simply wanted to stay fit, ease the tension in my back, and feel more like myself again. I also wanted to satisfy my curiosity about yoga in general.
What I didn't realize was that the simple act of moving my body with my breath would change so much more than my physical health.
Over the years, these practices have remained a source of healing, but they've also become a source of joy, connection, purpose, and community. Truly. They even awakened a desire to teach that I never knew I had.
The funny part? None of that required me to be "good" at yoga when I started . I wasn't actually very flexible then (sound familiar? 😉), and there were plenty of poses that felt more humbling than inspiring. There were even poses that I “hated” but all I had to do was to keep showing up.
That's the real magic of practice. You don't have to become someone else before you begin. The practice helps you come home to who you already are.
So if you've been curious about yoga or meditation but aren't quite sure how to start, here are a few of my top tips:
5️⃣ Identify the pain point.
What are you hoping this practice will address? Stress? Anxiety? Difficulty sleeping? Chronic overwhelm? A sense of disconnection? Knowing your "why" will help you choose the right practice and stay committed when motivation wavers.
4️⃣ Use props or anchors. For yoga, that would blocks and a strap, or even a favorite blanket. For meditation, it could be music, a special chair, a mantra, or simply a particular breath. Our brains love cues that signal, "It's time to settle in."
3️⃣ Create a dedicated practice space. It doesn't need to be an Instagram-worthy meditation room. A corner of a bedroom. A chair by a window. A spot on the floor where your mat lives. Give yourself a place that makes practicing easy.
2️⃣ Establish a non-negotiable schedule. We don't miss client meetings. We don't forget court appearances. We don't skip important deadlines. Treat your practice with the same respect. 20 minutes once a week is powerful, it will just take longer to go deeper.
1️⃣ Start right where you are.Not where you think you should be. Not when life gets less busy. Not after you buy the perfect leggings, or meditation cushion.
Right here. Today.
P.S.: I took this photo two years ago on the coast of the Arabian Sea in Oman, south of Salalah, at the start of monsoon season. The weather was wild. The rains had already begun renewing life in the desert, transforming a dry landscape into something lush and vibrant. That solitary blue door standing open on the shoreline felt like the perfect reminder: Sometimes the next step isn't to wait until conditions are ideal—it's simply to walk through the door that's right in front of you. ✨
