Throughout September, we’ll be sharing stories from individuals in recovery. Stories of strength, resilience, hope, and the reminder that recovery is possible.

To begin Recovery Month, we’re honored to share Laura Farmer’s story.

🚨 The Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center QLA Team has stocked Blessing Boxes throughout Mercer County with Narcan (naloxone) to increase access to this lifesaving medication and support overdose prevention.

Narcan can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose and restore breathing when administered in time. Opioid and stimulant misuse can have serious consequences, including dependence, overdose, heart complications, seizures, and death. Stimulants may also contain unexpected substances, including fentanyl, making access to Narcan important for anyone who may encounter an opioid overdose.

Know the signs. Carry Narcan. Know how to respond.

If you suspect an overdose, call 911, administer Narcan, and stay with the person until help arrives.

💜🕯️ Yesterday, Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center held our Overdose Awareness Day event, and it was an incredible success.

The day was filled with so much hope and so many powerful stories of recovery, courage, and perseverance. We were deeply inspired by every person who shared their journey and reminded us that recovery is possible, lives can be transformed, and no one has to walk this road alone. 💜

Our “Message in a Bottle” theme gave members of our community an opportunity to share messages of hope, remembrance, encouragement, and love. Each message represented a story, a memory, or a reminder that every life matters. 🌊🍾💌

Amid the hope and celebration of recovery, we also paused to honor and remember the lives lost to overdose. We carry their memories with us as we continue working toward greater awareness, compassion, prevention, treatment, and support for individuals and families affected by substance use. 🕯️

Thank you to everyone who helped make this meaningful event possible and to every person who attended, participated, shared their story, or offered a message from the heart. Together, we can end stigma, inspire hope, and remind others that recovery is real. 💜✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Wyoming and McDowell County RAP (Resource and Action Planning) Session!

A special thank you to Delegate Green, Rachel Thaxton with the West Virginia First Foundation, Greg Duckworth with the West Virginia First Foundation, and the many community partners from McDowell and Wyoming counties who took the time to participate.

Bringing local leaders and partners together is essential to identifying available resources, recognizing gaps in services, and developing meaningful action steps to better serve our communities.

Another 20 individuals are now equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to recognize and respond to someone experiencing thoughts of su***de.

Over the past two days, our very own COMAT Director Brandi Farmer, QLA Director Jessica Via, Mobile Crisis Coordinator Aprylle Buford, and guest co-trainer Kenneth Jordan had the opportunity to facilitate Applied Su***de Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).

We are proud to welcome this class into a global community of more than two million people who have received ASIST training. For more than 40 years, ASIST has provided participants with skills designed to help them intervene, offer support, and connect individuals to safety and hope.

Congratulations to our newest ASIST participants! Your willingness to learn these skills and be there for someone in a moment of crisis truly matters.
