New World Screwworm has been detected in an animal in Texas. Information about New World Screwworm can be found in the attached infographic.

The adult screwworm fly is about the size of a common housefly. It gets its name from the behavior of its larvae (maggots) as they burrow into a wound. The maggots cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts’ tissue & the wound can quickly become enlarged and deeper as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue. Regular inspection of wounds, use of insect repellents and maintaining clean environments can help with prevention. Quarantine of infected animals, proper wound care and treatment, and monitoring for signs of infestation lowers the risk of infection and transmission.

Lastly, NWS infestations are a reportable disease! Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to a local accredited veterinarian, your State Animal Health Official, or a USDA veterinarian. Screwworms can be transmitted to people, so limit contact with animals if you have any kind of open wound.
