Since 2014, physicians across Newberry have helped train third and fourth-year VCOM medical students - welcoming them into exam rooms, sharing their knowledge and helping shape the next generation of physicians.

Each year, on the evening before the students begin their very first clinical rotation, Dr. Oscar Lovelace hosts a casual dinner for the students and their local preceptors. It gives them a chance to meet, ask questions and settle a few nerves before stepping into one of the most challenging and rewarding seasons of medical school.

What makes this tradition especially meaningful is seeing the full-circle moments. Several members of those early classes have now completed medical school and residency and are practicing physicians. Even better, some are finding their way back to Newberry to care for the community that helped train them.

We are especially proud to recognize Dr. Becky White, Dr. Kelly Rose and Dr. Mike Bernardo. They are wonderful examples of what can grow when a community invests in its future physicians.

If you see one of these students at your provider’s office or at the hospital, offer them a smile and a word of encouragement. They are working hard, learning every day and preparing to care for communities like ours.

This gathering is more than a dinner. It is a reminder that mentorship matters, relationships last and sometimes the students seated around the table return years later as colleagues.

Twenty-four stitches certainly wasn't on the agenda - not for this tough guy (or his mom) who happens to be one of our nurses!

Thankfully, he was surrounded by a team he knew and trusted. That’s the beauty of comprehensive family medicine: caring for our patients through every stage of life, from routine checkups to the unexpected moments that require a few - or 24 stitches.
