I thought for a very long time that connection with people was more of a black and white thing. This was especially true when I was struggling with my mental health. You either had those deep and trusting bonds with others, or you felt lonely even in a room full of people. You either went to fun hangouts with friends, or you stayed at home so no one could see you.

I’ve come to learn that connection is more of a direction to move toward rather than a destination to be reached. A muscle to keep building, even when that looks like simply being in the presence of others, smiling at the person passing by, or wandering around a market. Each intentional way we recognize our ties to others around us, no matter how big or small, is one more way we move toward feeling more connection. 🩷

We have a new start date for Showing Up (in Sweatpants) - starting NEXT Sunday 3/15 at 10:30a. So, another week to decide!

We’d been getting a fair amount questions about the program (which, makes a lot of sense since it’s a different approach than we might be used to).

SO, I’ve decided to open up my schedule this week so that if you’d like to chat individually about the program (video, phone, over DMs etc), you can book a time for a ā€œcoffee chatā€ at the link in bio (or just message me on here). This is open to potential participants, loved ones, providers, etc.

Wishing you all a not-too-sleepy Daylight Savings ā˜€ļøšŸŒž

I remember that spring day in 2020 so clearly -even when so much from that period is buried in a haze.

I was on leave from med school, in a holding zone (both figuratively and literally, ). Frozen, even as the sun shined brightly on me in the front yard.

I’d done exactly what I was supposed to. Got the diagnosis. Did the treatment. Then the next treatment. Then the next.

I’d ask myself, when would ā€œgetting betterā€ part come?

Instead I waited. Treading water, just barely floating.

The thought of going grocery shopping felt so heavy and big — not to mention actually cooking. The ā€œbreakfast on Saturday?ā€ text from a friend stayed unread. Maybe if I stayed hidden like that, no one would see what I’d become.

That’s when I knew I needed more help. But, not more medication or more emotional processing skills. Not more programs that felt complete on paper but left me without a next step.

I needed people who knew what this felt like, who just got it. I needed to feel less defective and more whole. I needed accompaniment as I tried to piece myself back together into something new — bravely, devastatingly.

*This* is why I started Showing Up (in Sweatpants).

Not because clinical guidelines told me to. Not because I’ve had some rapid transformation and am now the recovery expert (lolll).

I started this because I’ve lived what it feels like to try everything and still feel left with nothing. To follow the plan you’re supposed to follow, only to be deemed ā€œtreatment resistant.ā€ To finally come up for air and find there’s no life jacket to help you swim.

Showing Up is my effort to use what I know — what I’ve experienced & trained in, and the lessons my peers and mentors have shared along the way. It’s a collective effort to build the kind of care we’ve wanted all along. Celebrating the expertise we’ve gained from living inside systems that are incomplete.

The next cohort starts virtually this Sunday 3/8, 10:30am EST. I hope you’ll consider joining — even if you don’t feel ready or well enough.
(That’s actually what this program is for. šŸ’œ)

WHO ELSE IS ON THE STRUGGLE BUS? THE KID RIGHT HERE IS!

I am in that dead of winter period where I become part wild animal, part overly enthusiastic crafter and it’s getting pretty weird all around.

This is also that time of year — heightened by too many contextual stressors — when it can feel like all bets are off. We’re on autopilot, numbed out, and the things that matter start to fall by the wayside. Brushing teeth, cleaning, painting, connecting, nourishing — just lose their relevance. And this can especially ring true for those of us with mental health challenges.

It has left me with a question I’ve been sitting with for years now — how do we live our lives meaningfully, beyond just getting through the day, when everything feels like it’s burning around us?

I so wish I had an easy, tidy answer, but I am still searching too. Through all these years studying and living and working in behavioral health systems, I do have some ideas. And I know you do too.

So let’s come together and talk about it this Sunday. I would be honored for you to join.

🩶 FREE WORKSHOP: How to Do the Things That Matter (Even When Life Feels Like a Dumpster Fire)

ā° Sunday 2/22, 12-12:45p EST with Q&A.

First off: hi hello. Yes it’s been a minute since posting on this social media thing. Here’s proof that CFD has been up to its old shenanigans, just more from behind the curtain.

It’s been a year, guys. Wow. Honestly this is one of the first times in a while I’ve let myself reflect on what has happened and what’s to come. The passage of time has always freaked me out, especially when it has felt like I’ve only been standing still.

I’m starting to learn just how vital reflections and celebrations are, though, even outside of New Years and birthdays. As we continue to navigate through this beautiful, devastating world, it’s so easy to autopilot it- I’ve been there for a long long time.

But if you’ve been ā€˜through it,’ you know that there are celebrations worth recognizing, even if only you can see how important they are. Getting out of bed in the morning, brushing your teeth and washing your body, letting yourself just breathe, going back to work or school after time off.

So here’s to us who may be celebrating growth in all sorts of ways. An ā€˜Anything Celebration’ as we call it in Showing Up in Sweatpants. I am so honored to share this space with you, in all its gorgeous imperfection.
