My office sits near the base of Mount Timpanogos. I have always loved the view from my office, but in my day to day it’s easy to forget it’s there. When something is always there, it’s easy for it to fade into the background.

This morning I couldn’t help but notice on my drive in. The first dusting of snow on top. The reds and golds of the trees. When I got to my office I just looked out that window, took a picture, and just stayed with it. It was more than noticing. It was allowing the entirety of an experience.

In positive psychology, we call this savoring. Savoring is turning toward what is good and really experiencing it. Being with it. Using your senses. Letting the experience grow a little.

So here’s my invitation: find one good thing today. Don’t rush past it. Give it 30 seconds. 45 seconds. A minute.

What’s your Timpanogos?

Learn to recognize the space between

09/25/2026

Everything I as a therapist comes back to one idea.

Between who you've been and who you're becoming there is a space. Most people treat that space as something to get through as fast as possible. I see it differently. That space is yours. It is where the work of healing gets done.

In it, you can notice your reactions before they choose for you. You can make peace with your story without being controlled by it. You can build who you're becoming, one honest choice at a time.

I care about my clients too much to only make them comfortable.

Comfort has its place. When someone is in crisis, safety comes first. But feeling better and getting better are not the same thing, and a lot of us have been taught to settle for the first.

Getting better usually means turning toward the thing you are avoiding or meaning. It is harder. The change also lasts longer.

Most of us think the problem is what happened. Sometimes it is. More often the problem is how quickly we react to it. Someone cuts you off and you are angry before you even decide to be. Your teenager rolls your eyes and you immediately demand respect.

There is a space between what happens to us and what we do next. For many people that space is nearly closed. Good therapy is the slow work of opening it.

This week, notice one moment where you answered too fast. Don't fix it. Just notice. That is where the space begins to open.
