It's kinda hard to describe to someone who hasn't been in labor before the actual value of a doula.
Aside from the preparation and advocacy — a huge part of my support is to help you feel physiologically safe (your partner plays a huge role here too, of course!).
But the value of feeling physiologically safe is tough to put into words.
Pictures help. The feeling I get when I look at these photos is the feeling I help foster.
What I actually do here is stay close. Like, arm's-reach close, right in your personal bubble. When you're deep in labor, your world gets really small — and having someone stay right there with you helps you feel like you're not alone in it.
I use my presence, touch, and words to remind you: your body knows what it's doing. You're doing so well, even when it doesn't feel like it. You can let go of control here — I've got you.
It's a BIG part of the job, and it makes a huge difference in how someone feels during their birth experience. It can feel like the difference between drowning and riding the waves.
I'm here to help you feel safe enough to surrender into this big and powerful thing, so that you can ride the waves without feeling like your abandoned at sea.
