As Putnam students return to school tomorrow, we anticipate increased traffic along the Route 44 detour route.

The combination of the ongoing detour and increased school-related traffic is expected to create heavier-than-normal congestion near Murphy Park along Recreation Park Road, Keech Street, and Wicker Street, particularly during student arrival and dismissal times.

If you have an upcoming appointment, we encourage you to allow extra travel time and plan accordingly to help ensure you arrive on time.

Celebrating an incredible summer of service! 🌟

Last Friday, we wrapped up the 2026 Junior Volunteer Program at DKH, and what a summer it was! 30 students contributed a combined 2,308 hours of service throughout DKH over seven weeks. They volunteered throughout the hospital, lending a hand in various departments include Emergency Department, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Human Resources, Materials Management, IT, Facilities, and more. But their impact went far beyond the hours they logged.

Our junior volunteers greeted patients and visitors, delivered mail and newspapers throughout the hospital, distributed items to our patients from our care cart, prepared materials for employee orientation, organized supplies, helped facilities with projects and took on countless other tasks that supported our patients, staff and hospital.

They also spent the summer exploring what a career in healthcare can look like. Through 15 career exploration events, they were introduced to 36 different healthcare careers, from nursing, surgery and anesthesiology to physical therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, laboratory, emergency medicine, human resources, and more. They also participated in job-shadow opportunities, giving them an even closer look at healthcare careers and the people who make them possible.

One of the highlights was a visit from Life Star, where they had the opportunity to learn about flight medicine and experience the Life Star helicopter up close.

We are incredibly proud of this year’s junior volunteers, and grateful for the enthusiasm, compassion, and hard work they brought to DKH. We hope the experiences they gained this summer will stay with them as they continue their education and explore their own paths.

A very special thank you to bankHometown for supporting and sponsoring the program, and to Janet Johnson, Volunteer Services Coordinator and Hannah Irons, Junior Volunteer Coordinator, for guiding, mentoring, and encouraging these students throughout the summer.

Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported Day Kimball Healthcare Foundation’s annual Cruisin’ for Cancer Care Motorcycle and Car Cruise held, Sunday, July 19 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park! Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, participants, donors, and volunteers, the event raised over $26,000 for the NE CT Cancer Fund of DKH, helping provide vital cancer screening and treatment services for the residents of Northeast Connecticut.

More than 235 motorcycle and car enthusiasts enjoyed laps around the 1.7-mile road course at Thompson Speedway, a scenic cruise through Northeast Connecticut, a delicious barbecue lunch at the Raceway Restaurant, and wonderful entertainment by the Southern Voice Band.
