Have you ever wished you could learn the skills your grandparents once used to thrive?

I'm excited to be helping my friends at Woodland Herbals bring the very first Lost Skills Gathering to life this fall, and I hope you'll join us.

Imagine spending a day wandering through the beautiful gardens at Clary Gardens, where curiosity leads the way and every path offers something new to discover. Across 20 acres of gardens, meadows, and native woods, you'll find herbalists, artisans, homesteaders, musicians, storytellers, blacksmiths, and makers sharing more than 50 timeless skills through hands-on demonstrations, conversations, and workshops.

This isn't a formal symposium or a typical festival. It's a living gathering of knowledge where you're free to explore at your own pace, following whatever sparks your curiosity.

At its heart, the Lost Skills Gathering is about connection—to the land, to one another, and to the practical skills that help us live with greater confidence, self-reliance, and intention.

If this sounds like your kind of day, I'd love to see you there.

And if you'd like to help make this inaugural gathering a success, they're still looking for volunteers. It's a wonderful opportunity to be part of something meaningful from the very beginning.

Lost Skills Gathering event info:
🗓 Saturday, October 3, 2026

I hope you'll come spend a day remembering that some of the most valuable skills aren't found on a screen—they're passed from hand to hand, one generation to the next. 🌿

This summer, Humulus lupulus (Hops), reminds me what persistence & quiet determination looks like. Its vigorous vines reach farther each day, twining their way upward, never rushing, never giving up, simply following the light with remarkable strength and purpose all in their own time.

They’ve claimed one half of the arch inside my garden, filling it with beautiful green strobiles (cones) that will soon be ready for harvest.

I’ll gather them when they’ve become light & papery, spring back after a gentle squeeze, and fill the air with that unmistakable resinous, slightly citrusy aroma. Tucked beneath their leafy bracts are tiny golden glands known as lupulin—rich in aromatic resins and essential oils, and the part herbalists prize most.

While many people know hops as an ingredient in beer, herbalists have long appreciated them for something entirely different.

Traditionally, Hops strobiles have been used to help ease tension, soothe a nervous stomach & digestive discomfort, and encourage deep, restorative sleep. That’s why it’s one of the botanicals you’ll find in my Night Traveler Elixir, where it’s thoughtfully blended with other relaxing herbs to help welcome a peaceful night’s rest.

Growing the very plants that become part of my remedies never gets old. It reminds me that good medicine begins long before it’s bottled—it begins with healthy soil, sunlight, rain, patient hands, and a season spent tending the garden.

Meet Meadow Minerals ~ a *new* herbal honey vinegar now available from the apothecary.

This is actually the second oxymel (or honey vinegar) I’ve made. The first, Spring Thyme, sold out in a single weekend, completely exceeding my expectations! More than anything, it reminded me that there is a growing desire to bring herbs into everyday life—woven into our meals, our daily rituals, and the simple ways we care for ourselves. Thank you to everyone who welcomed this new offering into your homes.

This vibrant, slightly sweet herbal honey vinegar begins the same way—with unfiltered apple cider vinegar, slowly infused this time with some of the most mineral-rich herbs in the herbal tradition.

Unlike alcohol tinctures, vinegar is especially valued for extracting minerals from plants, making it a wonderful way to enjoy mineral-rich herbs as part of your everyday wellness routine.

Inside every bottle you’ll find:

🌿 Nettle, Oat Straw, Lamb’s Quarters & Alfalfa – treasured for their abundance of minerals that help nourish healthy bones, hair, skin, nails & overall vitality.

🌿 Yellow dock — traditionally paired with mineral-rich herbs to support healthy iron utilization & the body’s natural absorption and utilization of nutrients.

🌿 Dandelion leaf & parsley — nourishing green allies that gently support digestion & healthy fluid balance.

🌿 Lemon balm — a calming herb that offers gentle digestive support while bringing a bright, citrusy note to the blend.

❤️ Beet Root Powder – valued for supporting healthy circulation & cardiovascular wellness, while providing antioxidant-rich betalains that help protect & nourish.

🍯 Raw Local Honey – adds natural sweetness while providing antioxidants, enzymes & prebiotic compounds. (From Bees Know Best Apiary)

Enjoy a tablespoon each day, stir it into sparkling water with ice for a summer-refreshing mocktail, or whisk it with olive oil for a vibrant dressing to drizzle in salad or over other dishes.

Grab yours this weekend at the From Scratch Co-Op farmers market - 433 Wheeling Ave from 8-noon.

Here’s to nourishing your body the way nature intended. 🌿
