August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, and it lines up perfectly with back-to-school season.

A lot of learning happens through a child's eyes, and vision trouble can look like trouble focusing, headaches, or falling behind in class. Kids do not always know their eyesight is off, because it is all they have ever known.

If your child squints at the board, sits close to screens, or complains of headaches, mention it to your provider. Catching a vision issue early can make a real difference in how the school year goes.

August practices and West Texas heat are a tough combination, especially for young athletes pushing hard to make the team.

A few simple habits go a long way: drink water before, during, and after practice, take breaks in the shade, and never ignore dizziness, cramps, or feeling sick in the heat. Those are signs to stop and cool down, not push through.

Coaches and parents, keep an eye on each other's kids out there. And if a young athlete shows signs of heat illness that do not improve with rest and water, get help right away.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a good reminder that staying current on vaccines is one of the simplest ways to protect your family and your community.

Immunizations are not just for kids heading back to school. Adults and older adults have recommended vaccines too, and what you need can change with age and health history.

Hardeman County Memorial Hospital is accepting applications for a full-time Outpatient Treatment RN or LVN, Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm. Position responsible for administering injections and infusions and obtaining pre-authorizations for treatments. Will also be responsible for facility infection control. Position offers competitive pay based on experience and benefits and $5,000.00 sign-on bonus. Before the students arrived, our teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, coaches, and school nurses were already back at work getting everything ready.

Rural schools ask a lot of the people who run them, and Hardeman County is lucky to have folks who show up year after year for our kids. From your hometown hospital, thank you for everything you do.
