You can tell he's feeling the deep tension/nervous system work and feeling the actual release by his stance.

This gelding had never experienced this type of deep tension release before, and one of the first things you'll notice is how he begins to stand wider behind.

Horses often widen their stance when they start letting go of tension and guarding patterns they've been holding. It's their way of finding comfort, stability, and a new place to balance.

This is what I do.

Helping horses release deep tension and compensation patterns through nervous-system-led bodywork.

No force. No stretching. Just giving his body the opportunity to release what it's been holding onto on its own as the nervous system begins to relax.

If your horse feels stiff, resistant, anxious, or simply not quite right, this work may help uncover what's beneath the surface.

Sometimes the biggest changes happen when a horse is finally given the opportunity to let go. 🥰✨️

Most of you said your horse's biggest struggle lately is stiffness or not wanting to move forward freely in the poll I posted. (Thank you to all who took part!🙂)

And while tension is one piece of the puzzle, it's not the only possibility.

A horse may become stiff or reluctant to move forward because of:

• Muscle tension and compensation patterns
• Soreness from work, travel, or time off
• Restricted movement through the neck, back, shoulders, or pelvis
• Hoof discomfort or poor balance
• Saddle fit issues
• Dental discomfort
• Joint arthritis or inflammation
• Weakness through the core and topline
• Old injuries they're still protecting
• Ulcers or other underlying health concerns
• A nervous system that has been holding stress or tension for a long time

When a horse suddenly doesn't want to move forward, struggles to stay soft, feels heavy in your hands, or seems "off" despite being cleared by the vet, I start asking why.

If this sounds like your horse, start with the basics:

✔️ Rule out medical concerns with your veterinarian.
✔️ Evaluate saddle fit, hoof balance, dental care, and nutrition.
✔️ Prioritize regular movement and turnout.
✔️ Focus on building strength through the core and topline.
✔️ Pay attention to small changes before they become bigger problems.

Sometimes they're just carrying tension, compensation, or discomfort somewhere in their body that's making movement harder than it should be.

And sometimes, helping them feel better is the first step to getting them moving better. ✨

The biggest thing? Don't ignore it.
Horses often spend months looking "a little stiff" or "a little off" before the issue becomes obvious enough that everyone notices.

Your horse doesn't have to be lame to be struggling.

Have you noticed your horse feels stiff all the time, or mostly at the beginning of a ride?

Today’s visits were all PEMF sessions, but these horses have been on a regular bodywork schedule with me.

I get asked a lot why I use both.

They do different things, but they work really well together.

My bodywork is nervous-system-led and focused on releasing deep tension and compensation patterns the horse builds just to keep moving and functioning comfortably.

PEMF supports what we’ve done in a different way. Helping with circulation, recovery, and overall body function so the horse can respond and settle into the changes more easily.

I don’t see PEMF as a replacement for bodywork, or bodywork as a replacement for PEMF. I use PEMF as support for the work I’m already doing so the body has an easier time holding onto the changes we create.

The horses that do best long-term are usually the ones getting consistent, proactive care, not just waiting until something feels off.

✨ Because it’s a lot easier to maintain comfort than it is to rebuild it.

Before I put my hands on a horse to start their deep tension/nervous-system-release session, I'm already gathering clues.

How they stand. Where they shift their weight. Their head and neck carriage. Patterns in their muscling. Even their expression.

Every horse tells a story before a session ever begins.

These small details can reveal compensation, tension, and areas of discomfort that might not be obvious during everyday handling or riding.

The goal isn't to chase symptoms, it's to understand what the horse's body is trying to tell us and using a "whole horse" approach.

Sometimes the biggest clues are the ones most people walk right past and don't tend to notice.

Have you ever noticed your horse standing the same way every time you see them?

🐴 Nose‑to‑Toes Stretch

How Does This Stretch Benefit My Horse?
Glad you asked🙂.....

1.Topline Release: Lengthens the long back muscles and encourages the horse to let go of tension through the thoracic and lumbar spine.

2. Core Activation: The downward reach naturally engages the abdominal sling, helping support posture and spinal stability.

3. Poll & Neck Softening: Following the treat encourages relaxation through the poll, atlas, and lower cervical chain.

4. Shoulder & Sternum Mobility: Opens the thoracic sling and helps horses who feel tight or stuck in the front end.

5. Improved Posture & Balance: Great for horses who travel hollow, inverted, or braced.

6. Nervous System Regulation: Because the horse chooses the range of motion, it supports parasympathetic release and reduces guarding

What you do:

1. Make sure your horses muscles are warmed up.

2. Hold a treat, I use a carrot or hay pellets, at the horse’s nose and slowly guide it straight down between their front legs so they reach toward their toes or as far as they can go without forcing.

3. Let them hold it for 3-5 seconds, then let them bring their head back up gently.

4. Do 2–3 reps, a few days a week.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes🙂

Can we talk about how exhausting it is to worry about your horse?

Like genuinely exhausting. The constant second guessing. "Do I call the vet?" "Do I wait?" "Am I being crazy?" "Am I not being crazy enough?"

You replay every ride. Every funky step. Every little thing you noticed and tucked away in the back of your head.

I do this ALL THE TIME, and usually at 2 am in the morning🤦‍♀️. I know my clients do this also. Honestly every horse person I know does this.

Because when you love your horse the way we do, that worry just kind of lives in you. It's part of the deal.
So if you're lying awake running through everything, convinced you're either overreacting or missing something huge...

You're not crazy. You're just a horse person who actually genuinely cares about your horse🐴

This is after just two deep tension/ nervous system release bodywork sessions.

You can already see changes in how he’s moving, loading, and organizing through his body.

What’s important is this isn’t just muscle work, it’s about releasing deeper tension patterns and compensation held in the nervous system.

This is still early in his process, and there are more layers we’ll continue to work through over time.

PEMF is also part of his upcoming care with me, and it pairs really well with this type of work.

While our bodywork plan helps release protective tension patterns, PEMF supports pain, circulation, tissue recovery, and overall cellular function so the body can respond and integrate changes more effectively.

Together, they support the horse on different levels of the same system.

This is just the beginning for him.😊🐴

Deep tension/nervous-system-led bodywork isn’t just muscles melting, it’s the brain switching from survive to thrive. Fancy is demonstrating the equine version of logging out for the weekend.😌🥰

"But she only stood square for a minute."

And that's exactly why I was excited.😊

This mare has a history of standing camped out in front and behind. During her session, she voluntarily stood square for a short period of time.

She simply chose a different posture.

As a bodyworker, I'm not looking for perfection immediately during or after a session. I'm looking for clues. No matter how small they seem.

When a horse briefly adopts a posture they've been avoiding, it tells me their body and nervous system may be experiencing a different option than before.

Will she stand square forever now? No.

But moments like this matter because lasting changes often start as brief glimpses of what's possible.

The body tries something new. The nervous system processes it. Then with time, repetition, and continued support, those moments can become the new normal.

Small wins are still wins. ❤️
