Let’s talk about the differences between baby blues and postpartum depression (PPD) 🧸

While there can be symptom overlap as shown in this chart, there are some key attributes that differentiate between baby blues and postpartum depression.

BABY BLUES…
➡️ Crying for no apparent reason

➡️ Impatient/Irritable

➡️ Still feel moments of happiness & joy

➡️ Typically resolved without treatment in 1-2 weeks

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION…
➡️ Difficulty bonding with baby

➡️ Excessive worry, agitation & severe mood swings

➡️ Thoughts of harming self or baby

➡️ Withdrawal from family & friends

➡️ Symptoms don’t get better or worsen

PPD is typically diagnosed based on a medical history, physical exam, and a mental health assessment. Your OBGYN may ask about symptoms, mood changes, and any other relevant factors.

We care about your physical, mental, and emotional health postpartum and we’re here for you every step of the way at New Horizons Women’s Care. If you notice any of these symptoms, call or text 480-895-9555 to schedule an appointment with one of our providers.

Have you had your mammogram yet this year?

Regular breast cancer screening is an important part of preventive care. Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to look for changes in breast tissue that may be too small to feel during a breast exam. Finding breast cancer earlier can provide more treatment options and improve outcomes.

At New Horizons Women’s Care, we offer 3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis. This technology takes multiple images of the breast from different angles, creating a more detailed, three-dimensional view of the breast tissue.

If your mammogram shows an area that needs a closer look, your provider may recommend additional imaging or testing, such as a diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound, or biopsy.

Breast cancer screening recommendations can vary based on your age, personal health history, and risk factors. Talk with your provider about the screening schedule that is right for you.

If you’re due for your mammogram, don’t put it off. Call or text 480-895-9555 to schedule your appointment with New Horizons Women’s Care.

Choosing the right birth control is a personal decision, and what works well for one woman may not be the best fit for another.

From pills and patches to IUDs and other options, there are several forms of contraception to consider based on your health, lifestyle, goals, and preferences.

IUDs are among the most effective forms of long-acting reversible contraception. The copper IUD is hormone-free and can provide pregnancy prevention for up to 10 years, depending on the specific device.

Not sure which option is right for you? Our providers at New Horizons Women’s Care can help you understand the benefits, potential side effects, and effectiveness of different methods so you can make an informed decision that feels right for you.

Hot flashes aren’t the only sign of perimenopause.

Perimenopause can begin earlier than many women expect, and symptoms can look different from woman to woman. You may notice changes in your body and how you feel before hot flashes ever become part of the picture.

Some common symptoms can include:
• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
• Anxiety or mood changes
• Changes in sleep
• Irregular or changing menstrual cycles
• Heavier or lighter periods
• Night sweats or hot flashes
• Changes in energy or libido

These changes can be frustrating, especially when you’re not sure what’s causing them. But you don’t have to simply “push through” or assume they’re just a normal part of getting older.

At New Horizons Women’s Care, our providers are here to help you understand what’s happening, answer your questions, and discuss personalized options for managing your symptoms and supporting your health through perimenopause and beyond.

If you’re expecting, save this post for a quick reference to the soft and hard signs of labor!

As you get closer to meeting your baby, your body may begin showing signs that labor is approaching. Some signs can happen days or even weeks before active labor, while others may indicate that it’s time to contact your provider or head to the hospital.

Soft signs of labor may include:
▫️ Increased vaginal discharge or loss of the mucus plug
▫️ Increased pelvic pressure
▫️ Cramping or irregular contractions
▫️ A feeling that your baby has “dropped” lower into your pelvis

Hard signs of labor may include:
▫️ Regular contractions that become stronger, longer, and closer together
▫️ Your water breaking
▫️ Cervical changes as your body prepares for delivery

Every pregnancy and labor experience is different. If you’re unsure whether you’re in labor or notice something that concerns you, don’t hesitate to contact your OBGYN or maternity care team for guidance.

If you’re currently pregnant, your New Horizons Women’s Care provider is here to support you throughout your pregnancy and prepare you for delivery.

Call or text 480-895-9555 to schedule your next prenatal appointment.

Struggling with heavy periods? Endometrial ablation may be an option.

If heavy menstrual bleeding is affecting your daily life, an endometrial ablation may help. The procedure removes a thin layer of the uterine lining to reduce menstrual bleeding, often making periods much lighter or, for some women, stopping them altogether.

Endometrial ablation is not the right option for everyone, and pregnancy is not recommended after the procedure. If you are considering ablation, your provider will discuss your symptoms, health history, and future pregnancy plans to determine if it is appropriate for you.

At New Horizons Women’s Care, our providers offer personalized treatment options for heavy menstrual bleeding and are here to help you find the right approach for your health and lifestyle.

If heavy periods are interfering with your life, you don’t have to simply live with them. Call or text 480-895-9555 to schedule an appointment and discuss your treatment options.

August is National Breastfeeding Month!

Breastfeeding can be a beautiful part of the postpartum journey, but it can also come with challenges, including clogged milk ducts.

If you notice a tender, firm area of your breast, here are a few things that may help:

▫️ Continue breastfeeding or expressing milk regularly
▫️ Avoid overly aggressive massage, which can increase inflammation
▫️ Use a cold pack between feeds to help with swelling and discomfort
▫️ Rest and stay hydrated
▫️ Make sure your baby has a comfortable, effective latch
▫️ Avoid tight clothing or anything that puts pressure on the breast

If symptoms are getting worse, you develop a fever or flu-like symptoms, or the area becomes increasingly red, hot, or painful, contact your healthcare provider. These can be signs of mastitis and may require treatment.

Breastfeeding looks different for every mother, and asking for support is always okay. At New Horizons Women’s Care, we’re here to support you throughout pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.

Pelvic floor discomfort and incontinence don’t have to become your new normal after having a baby.

Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period can place significant stress on the pelvic floor, sometimes leading to symptoms such as:

• Pelvic pressure or discomfort
• Urinary leakage or urgency
• Pain with in*******se
• Difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels
• A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis

While these concerns are common, they are not something you simply have to live with. Pelvic floor symptoms can also occur at other stages of life, including during perimenopause and menopause.

At New Horizons Women’s Care, our providers can evaluate your symptoms and help identify the underlying cause so we can discuss treatment options that are right for you.

If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. Your pelvic health matters.
