“I grew up in an environment where conversations about identity, gender, and s*xuality were often absent or discouraged. For many years, I struggled to understand where I belonged and whether there was space for someone like me. Realizing that I was q***r was a gradual journey of self-understanding, reflection, and acceptance.

As I learned more about myself, I also became aware of the challenges many LGBTQ+ people face like silence, misunderstanding, social pressure, and the fear of rejection. These experiences taught me resilience and empathy. They pushed me to seek communities, stories, and friendships that celebrated authenticity rather than conformity. Through these connections, I learned that identity is not something to hide but something that can be embraced with pride.

My experiences as a q***r person have shaped the way I see the world. They have made me more attentive to marginalized voices and more committed to creating inclusive spaces where people feel safe to express themselves. They have also influenced my academic interests, particularly in language, communication, and how society shapes human experiences. I believe that understanding people begins with listening to their stories. Today, I carry my identity not as a burden but as a source of strength. Being q***r has taught me courage, self-reflection, and compassion for others navigating their own journeys.”

“I was mostly a quiet kid. I grew up in a British Bangladeshi Muslim household where religion was woven into everything. But underneath that, I was silently working something out about myself that didn’t quite fit the picture. Being gay and Bengali can feel like living in two worlds that never fully overlap. You love your culture and community, while holding this part of yourself at a distance. Not dramatically.

Cinema and music were where I went when the real world felt like too much. As a kid I was obsessed with Michael Jackson and Beyoncé. I remember asking my mum if I could be a singer like him. That didn’t go down well. Q***r cinema helped fill a different gap. Films like Moonlight and My Beautiful Laundrette, about men navigating q***rness in cultures where it isn’t spoken about, did the emotional work that words couldn’t. I started singing classes at 20 and acting classes at 25, quietly, on my own terms.

Bangladeshi representation in western media is scarce. When South Asian people do appear on screen, we’re often des*xualised or edited down to make others comfortable. I also think South Asian as a label can flatten the distinctions within it. I’m not just South Asian, I’m Bangladeshi-Bengali, and that specificity gets lost. Exploring q***r and kink nightlife in Manchester has been part of owning that for me. I’m a s*xually confident Bangladeshi-Bengali man and I want to see more of us on screen like that, fully realised, unapologetic, not shrinking. If that representation doesn’t exist yet, I want a hand in making it with Bengali filmmakers.

I’m 27 and still figuring out what it means to take up more space. Knowing other q***r Bengalis are out there having these conversations makes that feel a little more possible.”

Announcing Joton: BMHM’s Creative & Embodied Self-Care Workshop Series!

Joton is a multi-modal, community-based self-care program designed to support mental and emotional well-being within the Bengali community through creativity, movement, mindfulness, and cultural connection.

Joton (যতন) means care, tending, and nurturing. This workshop series is designed to help you explore self-care, creativity, and wellness in ways that feel accessible, culturally meaningful, and enjoyable. Each session is a safe space to learn, connect, and nurture your well-being.

Joton workshops are open to Bengali adults of all genders, immigration statuses, and experiences. No prior experience is required — just curiosity and the willingness to care for yourself. Workshops are no-cost or donation-based to remove financial barriers and ensure equitable access for participants.

Our Joton series will officially launch in
July 2026. Stay tuned on social media or sign up for our mailing list to be in the loop! Email [email protected] or DM us on IG to join our mailing list.

Joton will be funded through a $5,000 award from CitizensNYC’s 2026 Community Leaders Grant CitizensNYC

A message from the BMHM team

TW: r**e, murder, su***de, s*xual assault, gender-based violence, violence against children

We address you with heavy hearts as we process the shocking news of the r**e and murder of 8-year old Ramisa Akter by her neighbor, Sohel Rana, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. On the same day, 10-year old Md Abdullah’s dead body was found in a Madrasa bathroom in Banasree. Police investigations revealed he was s*xually assaulted by 19-year old student Shihab Hossain.

These are not isolated incidents. The rise of gender-based violence, harm that is directed at an individual based on their biological s*x or gender identity, reveals the state’s failure to protect the safety of children. The patriarchy harms all genders, but especially those who are most vulnerable. According to the human rights group Odhikar, thousands of underage girls have experienced s*xual violence in Bangladesh in recent years. These numbers only reflect a fraction of cases as many incidents remain unreported due to stigma, fear of retaliation and harrassment during judicial proceedings. Justice is often delayed or completely denied, and many survivors and grieving families are left navigating trauma with inadequate legal and emotional support.

It is natural to feel sadness, anger, confusion, or even numbness when we hear about such horrific violence. Please allow yourself to move through the coming days with extra care for your own needs. Connect with people who feel safe, look into resources available in BMHM or your local area (some listed in the third slide), nourish your body, and create boundaries with work/school demands as you see fit. You are not alone.

BMHM stands in solidarity with all survivors of s*xual violence and those who are grieving and seeking justice for the loss of their loved ones.
