One of our absolute favorite books right now is The Imitation Book by Stephanie Anderson, MS, CCC-SLP! It has been a hit in our house (my daughter asks for it on repeat!).
What I love most is that it doesn’t just tell a story, it provides opportunities for engagement with your child. Every page is an opportunity for imitation, movement, and connection!
As an SLP, I’m always looking for books that naturally support early communication skills. This one does exactly that through simple, interactive moments that feel like play.
A few things it helps build:
✨ imitation (gestures + actions)
✨ joint attention
✨ engagement and turn-taking
✨ early communication skills
✨ connection between you and your child
So how do you read it?
Read the words, model the action, pause and wait!
That simple expectant pause is where so much communication begins.
It’s one of those books you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again because it just works! AND more importantly, your child will love it!
If you’re looking for a fun, interactive way to support early language development at home, this is such a great one to add to your bookshelf 💚
