In Loving Memory of Joan Serrano Pérez
September 9, 2008 – May 31, 2026

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joan Serrano Pérez, who departed this life on May 31, 2026, at the age of 17.

Joan was born on September 9, 2008, to his loving parents, Minerva Pérez and José Guadalupe Serrano. He was a cherished son, beloved brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend whose presence brought joy to everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his parents and his siblings, Jonathan, Francisco, José, Ximena, and Sebastián Serrano Pérez, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. Joan spent the first seven years of his life in North Carolina before moving with his family to Georgia around 2015. There, he continued to grow into a remarkable young man, creating lasting friendships and touching the lives of many. Whether in North Carolina or Georgia, Joan brought happiness and laughter wherever he went.

One of Joan’s greatest passions was soccer. He played with dedication and heart, finding joy every time he stepped onto the field. He also loved fishing, caring for his roosters, and dancing. Whether he was playing a match, spending time outdoors, dancing with loved ones, or simply sharing a laugh, Joan embraced life fully and brought energy and warmth to those around him. Joan was determined, hardworking, and full of ambition. He believed in building a better future not only for himself, but for his family as well.

Though his time on earth was far too short, Joan made a lasting impact on his family, friends, teammates, and everyone fortunate enough to know him. The love he shared, the laughter he brought, and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of those who loved him for the rest of their lives.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the countless ways he touched others. His family finds comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to shine through the memories he leaves behind and the love that will never fade.

Today we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and love of freedom have shaped the nation we call home, and their legacies continue to live on in the stories we tell and the freedoms we cherish.

This Memorial Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to all who served and to the Gold Star families who carry their memory forward.
May we never forget. May their sacrifices always be remembered.

🌿 Elephants Mourn Their Dead 🌿

Elephants don’t just pass by when one of their own dies. They actively mourn, showing complex thanatological behaviors documented in multiple studies.
Herd members (both family and unrelated elephants) gather around carcasses, even long-decayed bones. They touch and investigate with trunks and feet, stand stationary, vocalize, and show heightened social interactions (Goldenberg & Wittemyer, 2020). They attempt to lift fallen or dying elephants, guard bodies, and revisit death sites weeks or months later. Mothers have been observed carrying dead calves for days.
In Asian elephants, researchers documented guarding, attempting to revive, and loud mourning. Some herds bury their dead calves (2024 studies). They use scent to recognize individuals long after death.
Classic observations, such as those by Iain Douglas-Hamilton’s team (2006), recorded herds staying with a dying matriarch, showing clear concern and helping attempts.
These behaviors reveal elephants’ exceptional memory, empathy, and social bonds — they recognize death and respond with what scientists describe as grief-like rituals.
Incredible, intelligent, and deeply emotional animals. 🐘

Pamela Walker Griffin

February 15, 1967 – January 20, 2026

Pam lived life fully on her own terms. She was a true gypsy soul — and she made it very clear she didn’t want any of that “she lit up a room” BS. Those who knew her understood exactly what she meant.

Pam was known for her strong spirit, independence, and unwavering authenticity. She showed up just as she was — loyal, raw, and unforgettable — leaving a lasting impression on everyone.

She loved riding Harleys, beach and pool days, music of all kinds, concerts, decorating, and living life in a style that was unmistakably hers.

A true daddy’s girl, Pam shared a deep bond with her father and cherished the time she spent with him. She proudly took over ownership of the nightclub her father had run for many years, formerly known as The New Knights, later known as The Rock and Rodeo, . Carrying on that legacy meant a great deal to her. Many of Pam’s favorite moments in life were spent inside those walls with her dad — the stories flowing, memories being made, and doing it their way.

Her husband, Terry Griffin, was her everything — her protector, her steady ground, and the person she trusted completely. Simple moments meant the most to Pam and she loved spending time just being together. Pam did life her way — and Terry stood with her through it all.

She was rarely alone thanks to her devoted fur baby, Reese, who was convinced she worked full-time as Pam’s shadow. It was a given that if you were up in the middle of the night, you’d likely find the two of them together, sharing cookies-and-cream ice cream.

Family meant everything to Pam, and she loved hers fiercely — without hesitation. She is survived by her loving husband, Terry Griffin; her son, Trey (Nickey) Griffin of Valdosta, Georgia; her daughters, Rina (Amber) Griffin of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Megan (Chad) Knebel of Phoenix, Arizona; Allison (Chad) Jackson of Valdosta, Georgia; several grandchildren who adored their “Pam-Pam”; her nephews, Mikey and Dalton Sims; and of course, her devoted fur baby, Reese.

Pam was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Evelyn Walker.

Pam was loved by many, touched many lives, and will be remembered exactly as she wanted to be — strong, honest, and unapologetically herself.

Laurie Ann Whiddon, 43, of Clyattville, Georgia passed away surrounded by family and loved ones Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Born on June 24, 1982 in Abbeville, Louisiana to Albert Van and Shirley Whiddon, she was a loving mother and daughter who cherished her family.

Laurie came from a large, Christian family. The love and kindness that was instilled early in her life overflowed into many areas. She was an excellent mother to her three daughters, providing countless memories for them to cherish. Those who knew Laurie, knew that it was rare for her to not have a rescue animal in her care. Her love for animals was evident in the way she cared for her beloved pets. Laurie could often be found in the outdoors gardening, camping, and fishing. She loved the Gulf and would vacation at Keaton Beach often. She loved sewing, crocheting, and crafting, traits that were passed down from her grandmothers and mother that she was able to share with her daughters. Laurie was a beloved member of Bemiss Road Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia.

Laurie is survived by her three loving daughters: KateLynn Warren, Kelsee Warren, and Kinsley Cagle; her parents: Rev. Van and Shirley Whiddon; brother: David Whiddon; sister: Cyndi Goerling; many nieces and nephews who referred to her as Lala; and many close cousins and friends.

Laurie was preceded in death by her grandparents: Albert Lee & Mamie Whiddon, and Audis Weldon, Sr. & Dora Weldon Montgomery; son: Charles Lee Whiddon; and her best friend and cherished chihuahua: Chica.

A visitation will be held in the chapel of Warren Funeral Services of Quitman on Sunday, November 2 from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at the chapel of Warren Funeral Services of Quitman Monday, November 3 at 2:00 pm with a procession to Lake Park Cemetery immediately following the ceremony.
