What Are Common Pediatric ENT Conditions?

Are Food Allergies and Food Sensitivity Different?

When the reaction to a particular food consumed is triggered in the digestive system, the reaction is due to sensitivity or intolerance. For example, symptoms of food intolerance and sensitivity include bloating, diarrhea, constipation, gas, cramping, and nausea, whereas a food allergic reaction will likely include swelling, hives, itching, dizziness, or anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. Many leading allergy and immunology experts say food sensitivities are not life-threatening, nor are they immune-mediated, but are instead caused by an inability to process or digest food properly. Food sensitivities are also far more common than food allergies and occur for several reasons, including:
- Improper amount of enzymes needed to digest food properly
- Reaction to food additives or preservatives (MSG, artificial colors)
- Sensitivity to caffeine or other chemicals
- Sensitivity to natural sugars found in certain foods

How Is Pediatric Allergy Testing Done?

Skin prick tests are carried out to find out if suspected allergens cause a response.
The doctor will use the following process:
- Clean the area with alcohol.
- Place drops of a liquid containing various allergens on the skin.
- Lightly prick the skin within the drops with a needle or special device.
- Examine the skin after about 15 minutes and take measurements on any red, swollen sites.
- Positive reactions can be very itchy, depending on the severity of the allergy, so a topical remedy may be applied to reduce discomfort.

Avoid using antihistamines for 24 hours before a skin prick test so that the full reaction can be observed.

When Does Snoring Become Sleep Apnea?

It starts when the breathing becomes very shallow due to these obstructions in the airway. The sleeper is not able to breathe deeply and take in enough oxygen.

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea experience a pattern of similar events that repeat throughout the night, sometimes hundreds of times. The number of breathing pauses per night, the duration of each pause and the lack of oxygen, in part, determine the severity of obstructive sleep apnea.

Not all patients who snore have sleep apnea and not all patients who have sleep apnea snore. However, because snoring could be a precursor to sleep apnea and is often a symptom of sleep apnea, it should not be ignored.
