Today our senior class hosted a fundraising drum circle event for their class International Intersections of Diversity and Music Therapy. In the class they are learning about MT in different countries. They were given the assignment to choose a country of their choice. The class chose to support Haiti! They are raising money for Haiti healthcare and schooling! Although the drum circle is over, the class has decided to continue to fundraise money until Monday (3/29)! Attached on the last slides are more information about the organization they are supporting and the Cash App. If you would like to donate in another way, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

In March, Ashley Glover, a senior music therapy major at Radford University, presented her research at the Great Lakes Regional Music Therapy Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Under the mentorship of Dr. Sekyung Jang, Ashley conducted a qualitative study exploring how Black music therapists (BMTs) view the use of music therapy in supporting the mental health of Black clients. Her research highlighted key themes including barriers, optimism, safe spaces, lived experiences, and awareness.

Ashley is passionate about amplifying underrepresented voices in the field and hopes to continue this work, aspiring to one day publish research that contributes to a more accessible and inclusive future in music therapy.

Music Therapy Club is a great way to learn about different interventions but also try out some that you want to practice and/or learn! In these pictures and video, some members of the club are doing a game called druno. Druno works on things such as grounding, turn taking, impulse control, active listening, leadership, motor skills, sustained attention, memory, and working together! There is even a version you can play standing up for clients who may need a bit more stimulation and movement.

If you didn’t know, Radford has a Music Therapy Club that meets on Fridays at 12:10pm (we tend to start earlier than that) and ALL are welcome! You heard that right, anyone with any major can join! We even have an amazing social event coming up! On October 4th, we will be going to Sinkland Farms as a group! Just like club, anyone is welcome to come along! If you let us know ahead of time, we can carpool and order our tickets early to get a little bit of a discount. If you’re interested in going please let one of our board members know! Hope to see you there!
