Direct observation is one of the most misunderstood — and most critical — procedures in DOT specimen collection. 👁️

A direct observation collection requires the collector to directly watch the donor provide a urine specimen. It's not standard procedure, but it IS federally required in specific situations:

✅ When a laboratory reports a specimen as substituted or adulterated on a previous test
✅ For all Return-to-Duty and Follow-Up tests
✅ When the collector observes behaviors suggesting tampering

Under 49 CFR Part 40, the observer must be the same gender as the donor, and the observation must be conducted with respect and in accordance with strict protocol.
