There are a few things in ABA that I will stand firm on every single timeâno matter what. Because at the end of the day, these are kids. And they deserve care that is ethical, individualized, compassionate and actually meaningful to their lives.
1. ABA should never be about erasing a childâs personality. The goal is communication, independence, confidence and quality of lifeânot making a child appear âtypical.â
2. Play is productive. Kids learn best when therapy feels natural, engaging and safe. They deserve to learn through play and real-life experiences.
3. If a skill only happens at the therapy table, itâs not generalized enough. Real progress shows up at home, in school, with peers, and in everyday routines.
4. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to ABA. Every child deserves individualized care built around their strengths, needs, interests and goals.
5. Ethical care will always matter more than fast results. Iâll choose compassionate, meaningful, evidence-based therapy over compliance-focused care every single time.
ABA should help children feel more understood, capable and supported in the world around them. Not force them to become someone theyâre not. And thatâs a hill Iâll gladly keep dying on.
