The NCDA&CS has confirmed the first established presence of the invasive yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) in the state, in Matthews.

Beekeepers are asked to watch for hornets around hives exhibiting “hawking-like behavior.” This behavior is a distinctive characteristic to the yellow-legged hornet as they prey on bees. Their hives are another distinctive feature as they can grow much larger than other hornets nests and have a reddish, muddy color to them compared to gray colored nests of bald-faced hornets for example. Yes, another swarm video. It never gets old watching a swarm show up seemingly out of nowhere, and go into a bait hive that was placed there for that very reason. I had family with me today, and wasn’t aware I was being videoed. This makes 2 at this location.

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!
I hope you have/had a wonderful day.

We’ve had a little excitement in the apiary today.
I’ve noticed scout bees at the entrance of the “bait hive” the last couple of days. I just happened to be near when the new tenants decided to move in. Quite a buzz in the air.
