Starting therapy can come with a lot of questions, and the person on the other end of that first call or email can make all the difference 💚

✨Meet Brianna Billings, our new Intake Coordinator at Hearth!

With a background in healthcare management and experience supporting clients throughout the care process, Brianna brings both knowledge and warmth to those first interactions. She’ll be helping new clients navigate getting started, answer questions, and feel more comfortable taking that first step.

Outside of work, Brianna loves spending time with her family and finding a good coffee shop ☕️

Spent the last few days at the EMDR International Association conference learning, catching up with friends and colleagues, and taking in A LOT of information 💚

Dr. Mara Tesler Stein’s session with The Touchstone Institute was an important reminder that perinatal trauma can happen throughout the entire reproductive journey, from infertility and pregnancy complications to birth, NICU experiences, postpartum, medical trauma and loss.

We also spent time learning about Polyvagal Theory alongside EMDR and parts work, including how important it is to understand what is happening in the nervous system before jumping into the story. There is no one-size-fits-all way to do this work. We have to know the tools and adapt them to the person sitting in front of us.

Also appreciated the conversation around Indigenous perspectives on healing and the idea that healing can be relational and collective, not only individual.

I even managed to fit in Aaisha Alvi | Postpartum Psychosis Awareness Advocate/Author’ conversation about her lived experience with postpartum psychosis, with Katrina Furey, MD | Reproductive Psychiatrist, which felt especially relevant to the perinatal work we do at Hearth.

Plus, getting to spend time with people who have supported my own EMDR journey, including Erica | Spoonie therapist, biz owner, recovering over-achiever, and finally meeting some online EMDR friends like Jennifer Ann Counseling in person 💚

Lots to bring home with me, professionally.and personally.

As we head into the weekend and mom groups, playdates and meetups, a little reminder: these spaces are meant to feel supportive 💚

Sharing milestones and wins can be helpful, but it can also unintentionally create comparison, anxiety and emotional distress for another mom.

Let’s be mindful of how we show up for each other.

Have you ever left a mom group feeling more anxious than when you arrived? Let’s chat in the comments!

Religious or church community hurt can be complicated, especially when faith, family, culture, identity, and belonging are all connected to the experience.

You can have complicated feelings about a religious community and still have your own relationship with faith or spirituality. You can question what you were taught, rethink what you believe, or decide what faith looks like for you now. Those things can exist together.

At Hearth, Karen Capehart and Izabella Munoz both support clients navigating religious hurt and theological concerns, alongside a range of other areas including anxiety, relationships, identity, life transitions, and more.

If this is something you’ve been carrying, there’s space to explore it here 💚

🔗 Karen and Izabella are currently accepting clients virtually and in person in Raleigh, NC.
