Research on the perinatal experience of genderqueer, trans, and nonbinary birthing people is woefully lacking, but some studies exist.

We are highlighting key takeaways from one of those studies: "Birthing beyond the binary: an interpretative Phenomenological analysis of perinatal mental health experiences among genderqueer and nonbinary birthing people."

As more women have children later in life, the overlap between postpartum recovery and perimenopause is becoming increasingly common.

We spoke with Ellen C. Byars, MSN, BSN, WHNP-BC, who specializes in hormone therapy, menopause, perimenopause, and sexual health, to learn more about perimenopause and how it impacts women's reproductive and mental health.

It is with a bittersweet feeling that we announce the departure of Veronica Kemeny, one of Anchor’s three founding members. She is moving on to a new chapter where she plans to focus on healthcare business development and sales.

Veronica served as Anchor’s Director of Outreach since our beginnings and played a crucial role in growing our operations and visibility in the maternal mental health field. Thank you, Veronica, for all you've done for Anchor, for moms, and for families. You will be missed!

The Anchor Center for Perinatal Mental Health Advancement is a non-profit organization co-founded by perinatal psychotherapists and the co-founders of Anchor Perinatal Wellness.

Its mission is to help remove barriers that might prevent people from accessing the maternal mental healthcare they need. If a mom can't afford childcare, lacks transportation, or is short on funds for co-pays, she may continue to struggle, despite treatment available in our own community. The Anchor Center helps to bridge that gap.

Please donate to give new and expecting moms the support they need to quickly heal and return to their families as the parent/partner/friend/community member they want to be.

$20 pays for an hour of childcare during a therapy session

$50 pays for transportation for 2 mental health appointments

$100 pays for a month of copays for mental health care

$250 pays for 5 perinatal mental health screenings for moms in need

$400 pays for a week of childcare for someone who needs inpatient care

$500 pays for a week of IOP for a mom without insurance (discounted 67% by Anchor Perinatal Wellness)

If you want to do "all the things," you should!

But we also want to remind new parents that it's okay to skip this stuff, too. A baby shower can be a lovely way to celebrate, but it also can be stressful, especially if a person is experiencing perinatal anxiety. A Meal Train is good intentioned and helpful for some, but it might be overwhelming for others. So much about pregnancy and birth is out of our control, so don't be afraid to say no (or yes!) to the pieces you can control.

We are always excited to share opportunities and resources from members of our larger perinatal mental health community.

Today, we are spotlighting who is leading, starting in July, an 8-week virtual therapy group for pregnant people who experienced a prior traumatic birth or have had a prior traumatic pregnancy loss and are carrying fear, anxiety, or dread about an upcoming delivery.

The group will focus on supporting people to:

— Understand why they are experiencing strong emotions related to an upcoming birth and to develop mindful awareness about what worsen symptoms

— Learn and practice new cognitive behavioral and mind-body coping skills to use before and during labor and delivery

— Learn and practice assertiveness and self-advocacy skills to share their preferences and needs for support with their medical team and loved ones

— Build a trauma-informed “cope ahead” plan for their labor

— Heal in community and approach their upcoming birth with greater agency and steadiness
