What felt intolerable in year one feels “manageable” by year three. That’s your baseline moving somewhere it shouldn’t.
Staying in unhealthy situations and environments doesn’t just cost you the years you’re in it. It resets your nervous system’s definition of normal.
The longer you’re in a dysregulated environment, the more your body adjusts to match it, until constant low grade dread just feels like “this is how I am.”
The situation isn’t going to recalibrate you back. Only distance and healing do that.
So, ask yourself: what did calm feel like before this job, this relationship, etc? Can you still remember it?
