Just another day for Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic. All at the same time:

1.) Dr. Khoury was performing an Extreme Lateral approach for resection of the MOST COMPLEX TUMOR!

2.) Dr. Margraf and Dr. Fukushima were performing a complicated revision Micro-vascular decompression for facial pain on someone who failed Gamma Knife 2 TIMES!

3.) Dr. Belayev and myself were removing a destroyed L2 vertebra and placing hardware to stabilize or horrible fracture is a young woman.

4.) We introduced Dr. Victoria Samuels (a wonderful and experienced neurosurgeon) as the newest member of our team! She will be starting our newest venture... “Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic Goldsboro”

We are and will remain the leaders in Brain and Spine Surgery and Care in North Carolina!

Can you say expansion?!! Can you say VIP experience?!!

Because WakeMed Cary and Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic is bringing all of that to the Triangle!!!

I had an amazing meeting yesterday with the awesome executive team at WakeMed Cary. We are going to use the new surgical recovery unit and the newest advanced robotics to bring the most boutique and well performed surgical spine care to area!!!

So excited to be moving part of my practice to Cary!!!

A day filled with mixed ups and downs... which can be the norm as a neurosurgeon.

My afternoon started with a great patient of mine having a likely recurrent herniated disc at L3/4 that will require a re-operation, which is a bummer... But I know we can get him right and are planning a fast move to the OR later this week!

Then, as I was finishing up at the hospital I received an amazing message from a different patient’s daughter about how well he is doing:

“Dad called me last week and told me that for the first time in years, he was not hopeless. I am forever grateful to you!”

My day is now made! A small 45 min micro-discectomy and I helped someone move past feeling “hopeless”! Wow... I’m at a loss for words!

Thank you to all my patients for putting their trust in me!

Remember paper maps in the car? Pulling them out while driving and trying to find your way? Yeah it was a disaster and we don’t do it anymore!!!

Same with spinal surgery! The best spinal surgeon options use advanced pre-op imaging, careful planning, and intra-operative use of robotics and navigation (GPS for the human spine)!!!

Today my team, my partner Dr. Garner, and I performed a highly technical revision / extension of prior surgery that would have been much harder without these technologies. We used pre-op planning to identify the spinal cord compression and the best options to connect into the prior hardware. Then, we were able to completely plan every step of the surgery and in the OR use robotics to guide our hands safely! Huge success today because of Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic’s devotion to learning, investing, and using the newest technologies!!!

Another great case and great patient who wanted to share!

72 yo female who I have been following for over a year. She has history of prior fusion and compression fractures... but clearly had degenerative scoliosis. We attempted non-surgical measures for over a year but unfortunately some times the best treatment is a large corrective surgery (T10-Pelvis decompression and fusion). She is now 3 months out from surgery and nearly pain free! I am so happy for her and so grateful she allowed me to be a part of her care!!!

Shout out to my WakeMed Hospital and Globus Hardware teams! Shout out to robotic / navigation surgery!

A great post op patient I saw today! He is so happy he wanted me to post his images and story! 65 yo male with remote history of anterior neck decompression and fusion surgery for arm pain (went well), now with years of chronic neck and trapezius pain. MRI and X-rays noted severe neck degenerative disease but no clear surgical pathologies. Dr. Bhat identified him as a great spinal cord stimulator candidate and performed an awesome trial on the patient (shout out to my colleagues at Spine and Pain Associates!!!). Now, he is 3 weeks post op from permanent implant and doing amazing (pain already 70-80% improved)!
