💚 It all began with seven mothers, 70 years ago today. On October 17, 1956, the first La Leche League meeting took place at Mary White’s home in Illinois, USA. Seven mothers came together to share breastfeeding support, information, and encouragement.

Seventy years later, La Leche League continues to connect mothers worldwide through breastfeeding support.

To celebrate this anniversary, we are sharing a special edition of LLL Today that looks back at our history and 70 years of mother-to-mother breastfeeding support.

Breastfeeding support can save lives. 💚

Increasing breastfeeding rates worldwide could save hundreds of thousands of children’s lives each year. WHO and UNICEF estimate that improved breastfeeding rates could save more than 820,000 lives. Around 48% of babies under six months worldwide are exclusively breastfed, with significant differences between countries.

For 70 years, La Leche League has connected mothers through mother-to-mother breastfeeding support.

Your milk provides nutrition and hydration, while breastfeeding brings comfort and closeness. Breastfeed as often as you can or whenever your child wants to. Frequent breastfeeding also helps your body keep making the milk your child needs.
