Most parents sit on this question for a year before they say it out loud, usually because asking feels like deciding something.

It is not. You are allowed to be curious about your own child without committing to anything at all.

If it sounds familiar, start writing down what you see. Two weeks of notes from home and from school is the most useful thing you can walk in with.

Most kids have some traits that are similar to those of a child with ADHD. Lots of energy, difficulty focusing, and bouncing from one task to the next. Sound familiar? Sometimes it's just a kid being a kid. And sometimes, particularly if it appears in more than one area of the child's life for more than six months, it is ADHD. This month's blog explains how an ADHD evaluation works step by step and whether you should consider having your child evaluated.

Nobody wants to be the parent who sent the sick kid. Nobody wants to burn a day off on a kid who is fine by ten.

Swipe for the rules. Save this for the next questionable Tuesday (or Thursday, or Friday, you get it).

And when it is a judgment call, that is what the phone is for. (919) 720-4876

If you have a baby at home, October is the month to ask about RSV.

Most kids get RSV by age two, and for most of them it looks like a bad cold. For babies under a year, though, it is the leading reason for hospital stays, because their airways are so small that a little swelling goes a long way.

The good news is that protection exists, and RSV season just started. Babies under 8 months can get a single antibody shot that carries them through the season. If mom got the RSV vaccine at least two weeks before delivery, baby is usually already covered.

New this year: the American Academy of Pediatrics widened the list of toddlers who qualify for a second-season dose, including babies born before 32 weeks and kids with Down syndrome or heart or lung conditions. If your child is 8 to 19 months and had a rough start, ask us.

We can help you figure out what your family needs and get it scheduled. (919) 720-4876

If your child has asthma, September deserves a heads-up.

Back-to-school colds, ragweed, and a summer of skipped controller meds tend to collide, and pediatricians even have a name for it: the September asthma peak.

The one thing that helps most is simple: do not wait for a flare to restart the daily controller inhaler. Used every day, it keeps the airways calm so an ordinary cold does not turn into a scary night.

Now is also a smart time to refresh your child's asthma action plan and make sure the school has a copy and an unexpired delivery inhaler.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a written asthma action plan for every child with asthma.

Questions about your child's breathing? Call us to schedule.

Early in the school year, some kids come home with letters from the teacher - or you learn about issues during curriculum night.

If your child is experiencing trouble focusing or homework that drags on for hours, you are not alone. A lot is expected of today's kids.

Before you worry, try this: break homework into short chunks with a timer, ten or fifteen minutes on, then a quick break.

For many kids, that one change turns the nightly battle around. If focus struggles keep showing up at home and at school, it is worth a conversation with a provider who knows your child. We are glad to help you sort it out.

This is exactly why we do it. Thank you to Jenn for sharing such kind words about our pediatric provider, Molly.

If you are choosing a pediatrician, one measure matters most: do you leave feeling heard and unhurried? That is the standard we hold for every visit.

If Little Oaks has been your kids' medical home, we would love to hear about it. Leave us a review; we read every one.

Here is something that surprises a lot of parents: one of the best things you can do for your child's health has nothing to do with dieting.

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and the research keeps pointing to something warm and simple: regular family meals. Kids who eat with their people tend to eat better, and the table is a chance to add good foods rather than banning the rest.

Keep the pressure low, let them see you enjoying vegetables, and skip the clean-plate rule.

The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages family meals and a no-shame approach to food.

If you have questions about your child's growth or diet, give us a call to schedule.

The kid who used to tell you everything now heads straight upstairs and shuts the door. Sometimes it is just growing up. Sometimes it is more.

September is Children's Mental Health Awareness Month, and here is a tip that really works: hard conversations go easier side by side than face-to-face. A drive, a walk, or doing the dishes together takes the pressure off eye contact, and kids open up.

If this year feels heavier than most, a check-in with a provider they trust is a good next step. We are here, and we are listening.
