As a consumer going in for a Pedicure; do you know what to look for to ensure a healthy and safe experience?
As a professional service provider in the industry--allow me to give you some tips and insights so that you can observe and relax during your next footcare service.
Foot bowls should be cleaned and flushed for 15-minutes with hot water in between each client with an EPA approved solution or at minimum bleach.
Even if there is a foot liner placed in the pedicure tub...this protocol still applies.
If implements are not sterilized another option is proper disinfection process using a state approved solution like BARBICIDE. Implements must be fully immersed for 10-15 minutes into the solution to kill surface bacteria and spores.
Porous foot files and pumice stones (like the one circled in the photo) can not be properly cleaned and should NOT be used on multiple clients. Porous files and foot stones have to be thrown away after each client.
Foot graters (like the one in this photo) are legal in some states but ideally are not the best option for removing heavily callused skin on the feet. Using an e-file with designated sanding bands is best or using a liquid callus softening solution.
Side Note: Many of the fungal infections that customer's get simply come from lack of proper disinfection processes.
