Children experience all of the same complicated, wonderful, confusing, and big emotions that adults do. It’s okay to feel all emotions, including feelings that are pleasant and uncomfortable. Emotions are important because they provide us with information about ourselves and our environment. They help us connect with one another. Learning how to notice, label, and express their feelings helps children feel more in control of their emotional experiences.

Encourage your elementary schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:

1️⃣ Label and name feelings to increase emotional vocabulary AND reinforce that you can feel more than one emotion at a time.
2️⃣ Notice body sensations that are attached to different emotions and provide clues for what they are feeling. Sometimes it's easier to notice physical symptoms first.
3️⃣ Rate the feeling of emotions on a scale of 1 to 10 to capture what we feel emotions in different amounts or intensities.

Research shows that eating dinner together as a family, even just a few times a week, can lead to stronger communication skills, reduced anxiety, healthier eating habits, and a greater sense of connection and security for kids.

In today’s fast-paced world, carving out time for shared meals can feel challenging, but the benefits are well worth it. Dr. Helen Egger, Chief Scientific & Medical Officer and Cofounder of Little Otter, sat down with to share how families can rethink the traditional ‘kitchen table family’ pressure.
