✨ Sublingual iron supplements are becoming increasingly popular—but are they actually absorbed through the tissues under your tongue?

The answer may surprise you.

Iron absorption depends on specialized transport proteins that exist only in the duodenum (the first part of your small intestine). Current evidence does not support sublingual iron as an effective treatment for iron deficiency.

In this carousel, I explain the physiology behind iron absorption and summarize what current research says.

☀️ How are you going to make time for yourself this summer?

Summer often brings longer days and more commitments.

Vacations. Family gatherings. Outdoor activities. Cookouts. Weekend trips. More opportunities to connect, explore, and enjoy life.

While many of these things bring joy, they can also leave little room for rest, recovery, and self-care.

In Chinese medicine, health is not about doing less. It is about creating balance.

It is easy to spend the summer taking care of everyone else and saying yes to every invitation while forgetting to check in with yourself. Yet your body still needs time to recharge, regulate, and restore.

Acupuncture can help support that balance by calming the nervous system, easing physical tension, improving sleep quality, and helping you feel more grounded amidst a busy season.

You do not have to wait until you feel depleted to take care of yourself.

✨ Enjoy the summer. Make the memories. Take the trip. Go to the cookout. But remember to leave a little space for your own well-being too.

✨ Spinal stenosis can change how you move—and how you live.

Pain, heaviness, or weakness in the legs with walking is often a sign that the nerves in the lower spine are under pressure.

While treatment often includes movement-based therapy, acupuncture can be a valuable addition—helping to modulate pain, improve circulation, and support function.

Many patients notice improved walking tolerance and greater ease with daily activity when care is consistent and individualized.

If you would like to better understand your options, I have shared more in my latest blog.

✨ Are You at Risk for Fatty Liver—Without Knowing It? ✨

I am completing an advanced course on Fatty Liver Disease this weekend, and it felt like the perfect time to share my recent blog on the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) Index, along with a related post, What Drives High Liver Enzymes? An Integrative Perspective.

The FIB-4 Index is a simple, noninvasive tool that uses routine lab markers to help estimate the risk of liver fibrosis. While it does not replace imaging or specialty care, it is a valuable screening and risk-stratification tool that can help guide earlier conversations and next steps.

Outside of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, my passion extends to all things medicine-related—particularly supporting those seeking to better understand why lab markers shift and how metabolic, inflammatory, and lifestyle factors influence liver health. This includes working directly with patients on sustainable lifestyle strategies as part of an integrative care approach.

Blood Pressure Treatment Thresholds: What Changed and Why It Matters 🫀

Many patients (and clinicians) remember when blood pressure medications were not started until readings reached ~140/90 mmHg. That is correct.

Before 2017, U.S. practice generally followed:

Lifestyle modification as first-line 🥗🏃‍♀️
Medications initiated at ≥140/90 mmHg
Higher systolic thresholds in some older adults

Patients with BP in the 130s/80s were often monitored, not treated.

The 2017 shift 📉

In 2017, the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology updated hypertension guidelines based on outcome data showing increased cardiovascular risk at lower BP levels.

Two key changes:

1️⃣ Redefinition of hypertension
Hypertension was reclassified as ≥130/80 mmHg.

2️⃣ Risk-based medication use
Medication was recommended for BP ≥130/80 when cardiovascular risk was elevated (e.g., diabetes, CKD, ASCVD, or high 10-year risk).

This is when many patients first encountered treatment at “lower” readings.

What changed most recently 🧠

The 2025 update did NOT lower BP thresholds again.

Wishing all of my patients a warm and joyful holiday season.

I am taking a little time to rest, reflect, and enjoy one of my favorite pursuits outside of the clinic—baking.

May this season bring you moments of ease, nourishment, and connection.

I look forward to continuing our work together in the new year.

🌿Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Screen Formula): Evidence-Based Immune Support 🌿

Yu Ping Feng San is a traditional formula used to strengthen immune resilience and reduce susceptibility to colds, allergies, and recurrent respiratory infections. Modern research now confirms these long-held benefits.

Allergic Rhinitis:
A 2025 analysis of 39 trials found that adding YPFS to standard treatment improved nasal symptoms, lowered IgE and inflammatory markers, and reduced relapse rates. Acupuncture combined with YPFS showed even stronger results, with benefits lasting weeks after treatment.

Pediatrics:
Clinical trials in children show higher IgA and IgG levels, stronger T-cell responses, fewer respiratory infections, and faster symptom improvement when YPFS is added to standard care.

How It Works:
YPFS helps regulate immune balance, calm allergic inflammation, and support Lung and Spleen function—providing broad, multi-pathway support aligned with both Chinese medicine and modern immunology.

This formula has a favourable safety profile, but it must be matched to your individual presentation to ensure effective and appropriate use. Please consult with a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner for personalised guidance.

Tennis and pickleball elbow continue to show up more frequently in clinic, both caused by the same overloaded tendon system. If elbow pain or grip weakness is limiting your daily activities, there are safe, research-supported options that help you heal.

I have just published a full guide on diagnosis, treatment strategies, and how acupuncture fits into a multimodal plan.

🩺 You may have seen the headlines — but here’s what they missed about melatonin and your heart.

Recent reports warned that melatonin might raise the risk of heart failure by 90%. That sounds alarming — but context matters.

The study behind those headlines hasn’t been peer-reviewed and only shows an association, not proof of harm. It followed people with insomnia — a condition that already increases cardiovascular risk through higher nighttime cortisol, sympathetic activation, and inflammation.

💡 What melatonin actually does:
Melatonin is a hormone released by the pineal gland in response to darkness. It helps coordinate circadian rhythm — the internal clock that regulates sleep, hormone release, blood pressure, and glucose metabolism.

Beyond its sleep role, melatonin acts as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecule, helping neutralize free radicals, protect mitochondria, and support vascular health. Some studies even suggest it can help regulate blood pressure and improve endothelial function.

It’s not a sedative; it’s a signal. Short-term use (for jet lag or shift work) can be beneficial, but nightly, long-term use without guidance may interfere with your body’s natural rhythm or mask deeper issues such as stress, hormone imbalance, or sleep apnea.

Support natural rhythm and heart health:
🌿 Gentle evening acupuncture to calm the vagus nerve and lower nighttime cortisol
🥣 A warm, protein-rich evening meal — not too late
🕯️ Dim lights and screens an hour before bed
🌙 Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time
🧘‍♀️ Practice relaxation or breathwork to settle the nervous system

🔍 Bottom line:
There’s no solid evidence that melatonin damages the heart.
In fact, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects may support cardiovascular repair and resilience when used appropriately.

Still, even “natural” supplements benefit from medical practitioner supervision, particularly with long-term use or pre-existing heart conditions.

✨ Sleep is medicine. Restore your rhythm, protect your heart, and rest from the inside out.
