"Wait… there's an mRNA flu shot now?"

Yep! The FDA approved the first one in August for adults 50 and older. And we know the word "mRNA" brings up a lot of questions, so Dr. B is answering them in plain English:
-There's no flu virus in it
-It doesn't touch your DNA
-Your body breaks it down within a few days
-It's one option, not a requirement. And whichever flu shot you choose, Dr. B's biggest wish is simply that you get one.

Members, you can get your flu shot right here in the office this year! Send Dr. B a quick message in SigmaMD to set it up, or to ask which flu shot is right for you.

The Case of the Seasonal Suspect: Getting Ahead of Flu Season

It's October, which means flu season is officially knocking.

If you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, now is the time.

CDC recommends getting vaccinated before the end of October, and it takes about two weeks for your protection to fully kick in.

This year's vaccine was also updated to go after the H3N2 strain that knocked so many people flat last winter. (You know, the one that hit in January and hung on for weeks.)

And here's the best part: True Insight members can now get their flu shot right here in the office! No big box store lines. Just send Dr. B a message in SigmaMD.

In her newest post, Dr. B breaks down when to get your shot, which version fits you, and why not all flu shots are the same.

Truth.

Truth.

We’ve somehow created a healthcare system where “covered by insurance” can still end with a bill that ruins your month.

And that’s the part that makes people crazy.

You do what you’re supposed to do. You get the preventive screening. You go in-network. You assume insurance will handle most of it.

Then the bill shows up and suddenly you’re trying to figure out deductibles, coinsurance, facility fees, anesthesia, pathology, whether the procedure was coded as screening or diagnostic, and why five different people seem to be billing you for the same afternoon.

I’m not saying this exact $2,700 bill is typical for everyone. There are too many details we don’t know.

But the bigger issue is real: healthcare pricing is so confusing that even people who HAVE insurance often have no clue what something is going to cost until after it’s already done.

That is a ridiculous way to run a system.

Ask most people what perimenopause causes and you'll hear "hot flashes."

But ask the women actually going through it? In a major global study this year, 95% reported exhaustion and 93% reported fatigue, ranking far above hot flashes.

If you've been dragging for months and chalking it up to work, stress, or the kids, it might be worth a closer look. Fatigue is often the first sign, not the last.

I promised a full post on perimenopause, and it's finally here: what it actually is, the signs worth noticing, how long it lasts, and when it's time to come in. 💛

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

At True Insight Direct Care, annual wellness exams are included as part of your membership. But breast health isn’t something to think about only once a year.

If you ever notice a change or have a concern, please let us know—any time of the year. We can evaluate your concerns and, when appropriate, send an order directly to one of our imaging partners for a mammogram.

Early detection matters. Don’t wait until your next annual exam to speak up about a concern.

The second annual National Direct Primary Care (DPC) Day, observed on November 1, is a celebration of physician independence and patient-centered care. It highlights the growing movement of doctors reclaiming their autonomy from insurance-driven healthcare models and instead offering direct, transparent, and affordable primary care to their patients and educating the public that they have options beyond the conventional system.

We are about 5 weeks away!! You are going to want to get your shirt soon.

Why This Day Matters

National Direct Primary Care Day serves as an opportunity to educate the public about the benefits of direct primary care and advocate for a healthcare system that prioritizes relationships over bureaucracy. It empowers both doctors and patients to take control of their healthcare decisions, fostering a model that is sustainable, transparent, and affordable for patients.

Why November 1?

The beginning of Open Enrollment for health insurance is Nov 1st, making it a great opportunity to highlight DPC as an alternative or complement to traditional insurance.

This raises awareness during a time people are reconsidering health care options and a timely reminder that there is another way to access healthcare.

DPC Day is a a symbolic contrast, emphasizing DPC as that alternative.

This day is also free from major holidays.

Educating the Public About Direct Primary Care

One of the most crucial aspects of National Direct Primary Care (DPC) Day is raising awareness about the benefits of this healthcare model. Despite its advantages, many patients remain unaware that DPC exists as an alternative to traditional insurance-based primary care. Educating the public is essential to empowering individuals to make informed healthcare decisions that prioritize affordability, accessibility, and quality.

Why Public Awareness Matters

Breaking Misconceptions – Many people assume that health insurance is the only way to access primary care, leading them to accept high premiums, copays, and restricted networks. DPC challenges this notion by offering direct, transparent pricing and unlimited access to primary care services.

Encouraging Preventive Care – With DPC, patients can see their doctor as often as needed without worrying about additional costs. This fosters a culture of preventive care, reducing the likelihood of chronic conditions and emergency visits.

Strengthening Doctor-Patient Relationships – Unlike traditional insurance-driven models, DPC allows physicians to spend more time with patients, leading to better health outcomes and personalized care.

Promoting Healthcare Independence – By educating the public, more individuals can take control of their healthcare choices, opting for a model that prioritizes their well-being over bureaucratic hurdles.

Leveraging National DPC Day for Advocacy

November 1 presents a unique opportunity to highlight DPC as an alternative to traditional health insurance, which begins its open enrollment period on the same day. By using this occasion to spread awareness, DPC advocates can help patients understand that they have options beyond the conventional system. Through social media campaigns, community events, and educational materials, National DPC Day can serve as a catalyst for a broader movement toward healthcare freedom.

DPC Day nonprofit T-shirts

I have made DPC Day shirts if you want to get them. I make no money on these, and DPC News is not mentioned anywhere. Because of that, I got the price down as low as I could. Some as low as $10.

There are multiple colors to choose from, so don’t worry if you don’t like the ones above. Also, there is a female physician logo and a male physician logo. Lastly, there are two backgrounds to choose from for the logo (white or tan).
