Menopause has the mic this month 🎀 October is World Menopause Month, and October 18th is World Menopause Day.

The International Menopause Society kicked off World Menopause Day in 2009, and this year they're focusing on chronic pain at midlife. If your joints ache more than they used to, or the migraines got worse, or you just hurt in ways you can't explain, you're not imagining it.

Almost 3 in 4 women deal with joint or muscle pain during perimenopause (IMS 2026 White Paper), and that pain is real, even when your tests come back normal.

The numbers say a lot about why so many of us are still struggling to get help.

Now we want to hear from you. Whether you're going through menopause transition or you're a menopause-informed provider, share your story in a video, a photo, or a post. Tag with , or message it to us and let us know we have your permission to share it on our website and socials. πŸ’œ

Quick rant from the road.

For the first time in a long time I actually have insurance (state health plan), so I figured filling my estrogen patch and trying the cream for the first time would finally be the easy part. It wasn't. The pharmacy told me the plan won't cover my prescriptions because the nurse practitioner who wrote them isn't covered by the plan. She's a licensed medical professional who actually knows menopause, so I really don't get why it matters who wrote it.

We're on a train headed to DC to advocate for perimenopause & menopause legislation.

from our Founder Anna:

Two years ago, a doctor flat out denied me HRT. She said, and I quote: "I only prescribe HRT to women who are postmenopausal."

For those of you who may not be aware, no proof is needed for an HRT prescription. No labs, especially in your mid-forties.

By the time I sat across from her, I was already in a mental health crisis, suicidal ideation multiple times a day. It hadn't happened overnight. It built over many months, until I crossed a threshold I'd never crossed before, a level of acceptance with leaving my kids. That's when I knew I had to tell someone how deeply I'd been struggling.

When I finally sought help, I had to wait three months for an appointment. By then, I was already deep in crisis.

I'm someone who's attuned to my own mind and body. I knew this wasn't normal for me. I knew it wasn't typical depression. I knew there had been a starting point, which meant there had to be an answer. And then I was denied the one that existed for me.

That's the moment that changed the direction of my life. It's why Shoup exists.

And it's why I'm on this train. On September 22, I'll be at the first-ever Perimenopause & Menopause Capitol Hill Day in DC, sitting down with our Congress people to ask them to co-sponsor bills that would fund menopause research, require medical schools to actually teach it, and protect workers dealing with symptoms on the job.

We deserve to live fully resourced, fully supported, and fully alive throughout peri/menopause, with access to proper whole mind and body care, education, research, information, and the legislation to back it up.

They say be the change...so with 29 states, ~125 fellow advocates, and representing NC (Jennifer Crosier)

Let's talk about what's on the table in DC.

There are four bills in Congress right now that would change how menopause is researched, taught, and treated at work.

The Advancing Menopause Care and Mid-Life Women's Health Act (H.R.9090 / S.4503) would put $275 million toward menopause research, provider training, and public health awareness over five years. It also creates Centers of Excellence in Menopause Care, so providers actually have somewhere to go for training.

The Menopause Education for Medical Students Act (H.R.9273) would require medical schools that get federal grants to actually teach menopause. This one was introduced by our very own NC Congresswoman Valerie Foushee.

The Menopausal Workers' Fairness Act of 2026 (H.R.9671) would make hot flashes, brain fog, and other menopause symptoms count for reasonable workplace accommodations, the same way other health conditions do.

Do me a favor. Take two minutes and invite your elected officials to attend the September 22 briefing. We're still waiting to hear form Senator Thom Tillis & Senator Ted Budd to schedule a meeting with them During Perimenopause & Menopause Capitol Hill Day.

Shoup's mission is to create a world where those navigating peri/menopause live fully resourced, fully supported, and fully alive.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration finally acknowledged this month that estradiol patches are in short supply due to increased demand.

If you're having trouble finding your patch:

- Check other pharmacies or call your pharmacist, they can check other locations and may know of an FDA-approved substitute.

- Check with your provider, they may have intel on what's available or other options. Keep checking back with your pharmacy as manufacturers work to catch up.

Where have you all been finding your patches lately? Drop it below, it might help someone else who's stuck.
