Many people use the terms overthinking and OCD interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.
Both can involve repetitive thoughts, doubt, and mental distress but the experience underneath is often very different.
With overthinking, the mind is usually trying to solve a problem.
With OCD, the mind becomes trapped in a cycle of obsessions and compulsions, where certainty feels necessary and relief is only temporary.
Understanding the difference matters because treatment approaches differ. OCD is highly treatable with evidence-based approaches like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which helps individuals learn to tolerate uncertainty without relying on compulsions.
Not every repetitive thought is OCD but if thoughts are consuming significant time, causing distress, or leading to compulsive behaviors, support is available.
