Many people use the terms overthinking and OCD interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

Both can involve repetitive thoughts, doubt, and mental distress but the experience underneath is often very different.

With overthinking, the mind is usually trying to solve a problem.

With OCD, the mind becomes trapped in a cycle of obsessions and compulsions, where certainty feels necessary and relief is only temporary.

Understanding the difference matters because treatment approaches differ. OCD is highly treatable with evidence-based approaches like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which helps individuals learn to tolerate uncertainty without relying on compulsions.

Not every repetitive thought is OCD but if thoughts are consuming significant time, causing distress, or leading to compulsive behaviors, support is available.

Many parents feel nervous about pursuing a psychological evaluation for their child. Questions about diagnoses, labels, and what the process will uncover are completely normal.

But after completing the evaluation process, many families say they wish they had known these four things sooner.

A psychological evaluation isn't about finding what's "wrong." It's about understanding what's needed to help a child thrive.

Knowledge doesn't change who your child is, it helps you better support who they already are.

For many teens, summer is associated with freedom, relaxation, and fewer responsibilities. But for some teen boys, the transition out of the school year can bring unexpected challenges.

School provides more than academics, it offers routine, structure, social connection, and a sense of purpose. When those systems suddenly disappear, some teens may struggle more than parents realize.

Loss of routine
Reduced social connection
Extended time alone
Shifts in mood or motivation

As parents, one of the most helpful things you can do is stay curious. Look for opportunities to connect without pressure, maintain some healthy routines, and create space for honest conversations.

Teen boys don't always talk about what they're carrying but that doesn't mean they aren't carrying anything.

Many therapists working with children may use games, toys, drawing, or creative activities during sessions. While these tools can be helpful, that is different from working with a Registered Play Therapist.

Play is not “just play” in therapy, it’s often how children process experiences, relationships, and emotions safely.

And when therapy meets children where they are developmentally, they are often able to engage more fully in the growing and healing process.

Our Registered Play Therapist, Alison Urban, LCSW, RPT, uses play therapy in a prescriptive and developmentally informed way to help children strengthen emotional regulation, resilience, communication, and coping skills.

Children do not always express emotions the same way adults do. Many children communicate stress, anxiety, frustration, or overwhelm through behavior, play, and emotional reactions rather than words.

That’s why play therapy can be such a powerful and developmentally appropriate form of support.

Play therapy is not simply “playing during therapy.” It is an evidence-based therapeutic approach specifically designed to support emotional development, communication, and healing in children.

When children feel safe, understood, and supported, meaningful change becomes possible.

Alison Urban is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist™ (RPT) who specializes in helping children, teens, and young adults navigate anxiety, emotional dysregulation, self-esteem challenges, life transitions, and relationship stress.

One thing that makes Alison’s work unique is her advanced training as a Registered Play Therapist.

Many therapists may incorporate toys, games, art, or creative activities into sessions with children, but becoming a Registered Play Therapist requires specialized education, supervised clinical experience, and advanced training specifically focused on:

🧠 Child development
🎭 Emotional expression through play
🧩 Attachment and behavioral patterns
🌱 Therapeutic interventions designed specifically for children

Alison believes that meaningful change happens when children feel truly understood and when therapy is developmentally appropriate, emotionally safe, and grounded in connection.

Mental health, learning, and attention-related concerns don’t always look the same in adolescence as they do in adulthood. As responsibilities, environments, and developmental expectations change, symptoms often change too.

This is one reason why psychological evaluations can be so valuable, they help identify patterns beneath the surface and provide a clearer understanding of how someone is functioning at their current stage of life.

A comprehensive psychological evaluation can:
✔ Clarify whether symptoms are related to ADHD, anxiety, learning differences, Autism, mood concerns, or executive functioning challenges
✔ Identify cognitive strengths alongside areas needing support
✔ Provide recommendations tailored to the individual’s stage of life
✔ Reduce confusion, frustration, and self-blame

Symptoms may evolve over time but understanding them can create a clearer path forward at any age.

Summer break can bring excitement, freedom, and a much-needed pause from school routines but for some children with ADHD, the loss of structure can also create challenges with regulation, focus, and emotional balance.

Summer doesn’t need to be perfectly structured to be supportive. Small adjustments can help children feel more successful, regulated, and understood.

How do you support your little ones over summer?

In healthy relationships, intentions matter but outcomes matter too.

Many conflicts happen not because someone meant to hurt their partner, but because the impact of their actions felt painful, dismissive, or disconnecting.

Understanding the difference between intention and impact can improve communication and reduce defensiveness.

Connection grows when people feel both understood and accountable for the impact of their actions.

Strong relationships aren’t built on perfection but on awareness, repair, and willingness to understand each other more deeply.
