Offices in Ramsey, Glen Rock, and Old Tappan plus remote/Zoom available. MedPsych Associates of New Jersey is a collaborative group practice comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and coaches. We work together as a team to provide the best possible comprehensive care. Our practice consists of a diverse and dynamic group of professionals with different specializations ranging from child and adolescent psychiatry to sports psychology to organizational and life coaching. Our clinicians have worked in schools, clinical practices, corporate environments, and teaching hospitals, which significantly contributes to the many years of experience and expertise in working with children and their families. Our psychiatrists provide a conservative approach to the use of medications. We strongly advocate a holistic approach to the treatment of every individual. We value the many great benefits of traditional medicine but also understand and believe in a holistic and preventive health model with an emphasis on balanced physical and emotional hygiene. We strongly believe that parents play an essential role and are an integral part of treatment when any child or teenager is being seen in our practice. We communicate regularly with schools and other treatment providers when necessary. Our practice is devoted to the needs of each patient and family, establishing a partnership to achieve wellness in all parts of life. We believe each patient deserves our dedication and attention to detail. We are committed to ensuring compassionate and extraordinary care.

At MedPsych, we take a thoughtful, conservative approach to medication and mental health treatment. Our goal is to help you feel better while exploring all available options. Medication is just one piece of the puzzle. Depending on the individual, treatment may also include behavioral therapy, supplements, brain scans, or other brain-based treatments. We aim to find the optimal approach for each person, and that is not always medications. If you are interested in learning about our approach, please contact us for a free consult.

Is your ADHD medication actually working? Sometimes, figuring that out isn’t as simple as asking, “How do you feel?” When deciding whether a dose should stay the same, go up, or go down, objective ADHD testing can provide another helpful piece of the puzzle. Instead of relying only on subjective observations, ADHD testing can give providers additional information about how someone is performing. In one recent case, our testing showed that a patient’s results were outside the ADHD range while taking their current medication—providing helpful confirmation that the treatment was working effectively.

Traditional psychiatry can often feel programmatic. At MedPsych, providers take a more individualized approach to psychiatric evaluations, combining the clinical conversation with objective data and quantitative EEG (qEEG) brain scans to gather a more comprehensive picture of what’s going on. That allows us to get a clearer sense of the issues, and to then be more targeted and personalized in treatment. We work with children, teens and adults. If you are interested in a provider for you or your child, we are happy to consult with you to see if this approach would be a good fit. You can schedule a free consultation at our website www.medpsychhealth.com or call us at 201.995.1004.

Back to school is a time when stress levels can rise. New classrooms, new teachers, new routines, and a whole lot of change can make kids and teens feel nervous or overwhelmed. Struggling with the transition doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. Before making big changes to treatment, medications, or school plans, allow your child a little time to settle in. A little patience can be helpful in these transition moments.

While psychiatric medications can play an important role in treatment, many people find themselves asking: Can I feel well while taking less? We have that conversation with patients frequently at MedPsych. Finding the right balance of medication benefit and managing side effects is an important part of the process for many. If you are interested in a consultation to discuss how to consider alternatives to you or your child's medications we would be happy to speak with you.

Mental health can sometimes feel frustratingly subjective. You may know something feels different, but it can be hard to explain exactly how—or even to tell whether you’re truly getting better. In today’s post, Dr. Hanna shares how MedPsych is working to bring more precision and objective insight into psychiatric care. By incorporating data and measurable tools, the goal is to better understand how each person is actually doing over time.

Feeling tense even after scrolling or binge-watching your favorite show? You’re not alone. As Jayna Heerema from Medpsych reminds us, “distraction isn’t always the same as relaxation.” True relaxation often comes from engaging your mind intentionally rather than escaping it. Mindful activities—like baking, journaling, or taking a quiet walk—can help you slow down, reconnect with your senses, and soothe stress in a deeper, more lasting way.

Next time you’re reaching for your phone to “unwind,” try choosing something that invites presence. What mindful moment will you create for yourself today?

A lot of people hesitate to start psychiatric medication because they fear it means being on meds for life. We aim to take a different, more hopeful approach. Medication is a tool—not a life sentence—and the real question is whether the benefits outweigh the risks right now. We explore all treatment options, consider what’s already been tried, and make thoughtful decisions based on both support and science.

Most importantly, we aim to help people eventually come off medication when it’s right for them—especially children. The goal isn’t lifelong dependence but long-term wellness.
