Attention is a practice built over time. The practice matters because most of what we're processing has taken over while we were somewhere else.. running last week's conversation, or rehearsing something we're worried about tomorrow.

None of that means anything is wrong. It's what the mind does. Coming back to the present is the practice.

A lot of what happens in therapy has a version of this in it. Naming what's here.. this body, this room.. before deciding anything else.

Keep on keeping on.. 🌿 605-721-8822

The nervous system carries stress after the stressor is gone. 🌿

Therapy is one of the settings where the pattern gets examined and the response gets slowly changed. The approach looks different across patients.. identifying triggers, building practices that help the system settle, or working on the specific situation that's keeping the loop going.

If any of this describes what you've been carrying, reach out when you're ready. 605-721-8822

Family therapy gets less visible attention than individual therapy, but a lot of what shifts a person's mental health lives in the family system around them.

Families come in for many reasons. Sometimes it's a child struggling in ways the parents can't reach on their own, or a blended family working out a new rhythm together. Sometimes it's a grief or illness reshaping the whole family, or a long-stuck sibling or parent-adult-child pattern that finally has room to move.

Our therapists work with the whole family or with the specific relationships that need attention first. Sessions may bring everyone into the room or focus on one relationship at a time, depending on what the situation calls for.

Both in-person and teletherapy sessions are available across the Black Hills region.

If a conversation would help you think through whether family therapy fits, our intake team is here. 🌿 605-721-8822

Most of what we work on in therapy is what happens when hard experiences show up. How we meet them, which patterns kick in, whether we can build something different with practice.

The waves come whether or not we're ready. Losses, changes, family stresses that don't wait for a good week. Practice builds the response to them.

You matter. 🌿 605-721-8822

A quiet note before the week starts. 🌿

Our grief support group meets Monday from 5:30 to 7 PM at our Rapid City office, led by Jan Sanford, LPC-MH. For people adjusting to the death of a loved one.

Grief doesn't respect the calendar. Some weeks are heavier than others, and the group is here for that.

Today is National Purple Heart Day. 🇺🇸

The Purple Heart is awarded to United States service members wounded or killed in combat, a tradition dating back to General Washington's 1782 Badge of Military Merit. It's been awarded more than a million times across our country's history.

At Scovel Psychological, we hold today with the weight it deserves. Combat wounds run beyond the physical. The trauma carried home from service.. and the years of adjustment that follow.. deserve the same attention as any other injury.

If you or a loved one are in crisis, reach out to the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. Veterans can press 1 after dialing to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

Our team includes providers with clinical focus on trauma, resilience, and the specific experiences of service members, veterans, and military families.

An idea that keeps some people from talking to a therapist about medication.. that using both is somehow either overkill or a sign one isn't working. The slides break down why the two are often used together.

For a lot of what patients bring in.. persistent depression, ongoing anxiety, bipolar patterns, some trauma-related symptoms.. combined treatment is what clinical guidelines recommend as the standard for many of these conditions. Medication can steady the biological floor. Therapy addresses the patterns, relationships, and skills built on top of that floor.

Peter Linde, PMHNP-BC, provides psychiatric medication management at our practice, and our therapists coordinate with him when combined treatment fits the situation.

If you've been carrying something and haven't been sure whether to talk to a therapist, a prescriber, or both, our intake team can walk you through it. 🌿 605-721-8822

August is National Wellness Month. 🌿

Wellness has become a word that carries a lot of packaging.. supplement subscriptions, morning routines, expensive candles, protocols that feel like more work than the thing they were supposed to help.

The version that holds up over time is usually less photogenic. Restorative sleep, a few relationships where you can be honest, movement your body doesn't dread, meals you sit down for, and the honest conversations about what's stressing you before it becomes a pattern.

For a lot of our patients, therapy fits into that shorter list.. an ongoing practice that helps keep everything else steady rather than a resource reserved for hard moments.

If August is the month you're taking stock, we're here for the conversation.
